Superman and Lois – The Best of Smallville

“The Best of Smallville” is episode five of season one of Superman and Lois.

Clark is telling his family about Smallville’s Harvest Fest. Gushing about it, in fact. A tradition since Smallville was founded and one in which people share with others. His mother loved it and spent weeks preparing. Everyone coming together in a sense of community. Clark is excited and is sure the others will love it.

At school, Sarah mentions Harvest Fest to Jordan and Jonathan. It’s hokey but has its own kind of specialness. She asks Jordan if he wants to go with her. Jonathan speaks for Jordan; his brother would love to go with her. Jonathan’s own girlfriend is coming. Unfortunately, she then rings up and dumps him by phone. Well, at least it wasn’t by text message.

At home, Clark is packing away some of his mother’s things to give away and so Lois can have the room as a home office. Except for a wooden box; that stays. Lois gets a call from Chrissy. Sharon Powell, who asked them to look into the disappearance of her son, Derek, in “The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower”, is at the Gazette. With her son.

Derek explains to them he doesn’t know what happened. He hit his head and lost his memory and was found outside a church. He doesn’t remember anything about the messages he left for his mother. Derek flinches when Sharon touches him. Sharon is happy Derek is back; there’s no more story. Lois reminds Sharon that someone tried to kill her. Sharon just thanks them for their help and leaves with Derek. Afterwards, both Chrissy and Lois know there is something up with the story. They’re talking whilst outside Luthor is watching from a camper. He says wherever Lois Lane goes, Superman follows.

At the community centre, Lana is collecting donations. Sharon and Derek arrive with clothes; she recognises his name. Derek excuses himself and leaves, holding his head. He calls Leslie Larr, saying something is wrong. He feels off. He needs to see her. And his eyes glow with heat vision and he sets fire to the community centre.

Clark is packing and the box sparks a memory from his childhood. Of talking to his mother and hearing something, finding two people loading electronics devices into the back of a truck. Young Clark is wearing a ski mask and, when a third man approaches from behind with a shotgun, disarms him, breaks the shotgun in half and knocks a bullet out of the air. He tells the men to put the stuff back. The leader agrees. Their bad. They’ll put it backs as if they were never there. In the present, Clark hears the fire at the community centre.

Kyle has lost one of his crew, Mitch, and finds him inside and injured. Clark arrives outside and sees Sharon, without Derek, then Kyle and Mitch inside. Clark also sees the roof is about to collapse and goes inside and puts the fire out. Covering everything with frost.

Clark talks to Lois. By time he got there the donations were destroyed and most have already given everything they could. And Sharon was outside. Derek wasn’t there but Sharon seemed to be looking for someone. Jonathan and Jordan arrive home and Jordan explains what happened.

Lois speaks to Kyle about the fire. He isn’t sure what caused it. Tom Mitchell was hurt and isn’t looking good. He might have seen Derek Powell, leaving as the fire trucks arrives. Lois calls Chrissy and asks her to get Sharon to the Gazette. Then Luthor speaks to Lois.

In the diner, Luthor claims he’s a technology reporter with a background as an engineer. He used to work for Luther Corp. He says he’s a huge fan of Lois and thinks there might be a bigger story about Morgan Edge. And he may have found a way inside the mines.

Jonathan wants to move back to Metropolis; he hates Smallville. He lost his friends and may never play football again. Clark’s flashbacks are from his own teenage problems when growing up. Derek’s powers seem to be out of control. And there’s something odd about them.
