“Anomaly XB-6783746” is episode ten of season five of Fringe.
In the previous episode, “Black Blotter”, Michael was recovered. Back at the lab, Peter says he has no Observer tech in him. Michael isn’t communicating, not even the same way he used to do. Walter is not very calm about this. Olivia tells Peter that previously Michael could feel what she wanted and communicate. It seems like now he can’t.
Olivia phones Nina at the Ministry of Science. Nina says it’s not safe to talk and she’ll call in ten minutes. Captain Windmark and two more Observers arrive at Nina’s office. She’s not there and her Loyalist secretary said she took an early lunch after a phone call on her private com. Windmark wants something bringing and says they have traced the sublimation device used in “Five-Twenty-Ten” to this office. When the device is brought, they hear Nina talking on the phone to Olivia about the child Observer.
Olivia meets with the others; there’s technology in a black lab that may allow them to communicate with Michael. Since the invasion, Nina has allowed the resistance to use it. She speaks to Peter about Walter; he is concerned about Walter reverting, and having parts of his brain removed. Nina says it’s a risk Walter is willing to take and if the plan is not completed in time, Walter may revert so much he doesn’t want to go through with it.
Nina hasn’t returned from lunch and Windmark wants to go to where the sublimation device was taken from.
The black lab is where the resistance experimented on Observers. The experiments were a failure, but may allow them to communicate with Michael. However, Michael doesn’t react like any other Observer, and though they can read his brain, the software can’t interpret it. Nina wonders if the connection between Michael and Olivia no longer exists, so Michael can’t understand what Olivia wants. She suggests instead of trying to get into Michael’s brain; they need to let him inside theirs. And there’s some more technology they need from the warehouse. Hastings can help them get it.
However, Hastings, along with the other staff there, are being interrogated by Windmark one at a time. At the same time as Walter, Peter and Olivia are breaking into the place. Nina has been compromised and Windmark knows she’s working with the resistance.
