Superman and Lois – The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower

“The Perks of Not Being a Wallflower” is episode three of season one of Superman and Lois.

Lois is being indecisive about picking a colour to redecorate. It ends up in a paint fight when Clark hears a problem with a bridge and leaves. Lois guesses there’s no reason to hide now the boys both know the truth, as Superman stops a bridge collapse in Guangzhou.

Back home, the boys ask Clark if he hears every sound in the world at once. And how does he tell the difference between someone in trouble and someone calling for a taxi? Clark says he trained at the Fortress to zero in on certain sounds. Jonathan wants to know what the most embarrassing thing Clark has ever heard is. Maybe when he’s older. Jordan would prefer super hearing to what he has. Lois and Clark tell him that every power has its own burden. And rules, meant to protect him. Don’t draw unnecessary attention. Clark doesn’t expect them to post it on Facebook – Jonathan says they’re not soccer moms – but his father was strict and it gave them a normal life. Which he wants for them. He can’t always be there.

Lana and Kyle are arguing in the car about something. Then Sarah joins them; it seems she’s been to therapy. At school, Jordan asks Sarah where she was and if she would like to hang later. She sees Sean and excuses herself.

Clark is at home, looking at the tractor. He starts listening, and hears Sean getting into it with Jordan at school. Jordan nearly uses his powers and then Clark appears. Back home, he ends up explaining that he listens in to make sure they’re okay. But not all the time. Not the right answer. That night, Lois says she’s not getting anyone to talk about the reverse mortgages. Clark tells her it takes time. Regarding the boys, remember what happened when Lois caught Clark doing the same for her? He thought he would lose her forever. And bought a lot of flowers. She tells him to make the same promise. The next morning, Clark apologises and says he won’t listen in again. Jonathan mentions the flowers and asks if he can have his allowance raised.

In the previous episode, “Heritage”, Lois quit the Daily Planet. She’s now working at the Smallville Gazette and Chrissy has a puff piece. Then a woman, Sharon Powell (Jill Teed), shows up. She read Lois’s article and has something about New Carthage. Derek, he son, is missing. He was a miner in New Carthage when Morgan Edge offered him the opportunity of a lifetime. She doesn’t know what. The last time she heard from him was a message on her phone saying the opportunity wasn’t what he expected. It sounded like Derek expected to go missing. Someone is watching them from outside.

Jordan overhears Sarah breaking up with Sean, and one of Sean’s friends from the team knocks into him from behind. Lana is doing cheer practice and Sarah ends up quitting. Jonathan is at football when Jordan shows up ready to try out. Jonathan thinks it’s a terrible idea. Jordan wants to push back at those pushing him. The coach sends him on and Jordan proves to be very good at tackling. Enough so that the coach punishes Jonathan for keeping this from him.

They meet with Sarah at the diner after school. She thinks they are very unusual people. Jordan heard her with Sean. Sarah says Sean was everything she wasn’t looking for. She’s been back at school a week and everything is the exact same. Have you ever wanted to change everything? Jordan has. Lana comes in to speak to Sarah. The conversation between them degenerates rapidly and she and Sarah leave as Clark arrives.

Jordan doesn’t tell his father about the American football, even though he was using abilities to do so well. Lois ends up with her car being firebombed. Apparently not the first time either.

There’s nothing from Captain Luther this episode. Instead, there’s more domestic stuff, largely related to Jordan, and threads of what appear to be a different story than Luther’s, though not much is learned this episode.
