The 4400 – Gone: Part 2

“Gone: Part 2” is episode five of season three of The 4400.

In the previous episode, “Gone: Part 1”, Maia and the other 4400 children were taken to the future then returned back to a different time and evidence of their presence erased. Marco arrives at Diana’s; she’s set the table for three and doesn’t know why. Alana and Tom are driving a sports car down a country road in one of Alana’s dream worlds when a young girl runs in front of the car and is hit. The girl disappears when they stop and neither knows why she was in the world. Then she appears walking down the road. Tom turns her around. She has no face. Both come out of the fantasy; neither knows who she was. It looks like memories of Maia are still there. Tom and Alana are trying to work out what happened. Alana believes that, as the dream worlds are built from their memories, this time something incomplete was dredged up. She doesn’t know from whose memory. Tomorrow night will be better.

Isabelle and Shawn are making out on a staircase in The 4400 Centre. Isabelle wants to do it there when Devon enters the staircase. Isabelle thinks that was embarrassing for her. Shawn is concerned everyone will find out.

At NTAC, Tom is doodling the girl when Jarvis enters, wondering where Diana is. Not there yet. Jarvis wants them to look into a 4400 who was attacked outside his home to see if it was a hate crime. Tom recognises the name; a lawyer and corporate raider. Lots of people will hate him. Diana rolls in with a lot of magazines for a private project.

The lawyer, Christopher Dubov, says it could be a hate crime for his sone hates him. Dubov and his wife split up and he introduced her to Bob, her new husband. He knew they belonged together. He could smell it. Dubov’s power is to smell pheromones and he can tell when people belong together. He and his wife weren’t getting on and he smelled his dentist’s and he smelled like Dubov’s wife. So, Dubov introduced them. Diana is distracted, looking at photos of Dubov and his son. Dubov hopes he can get his son to forgive him; there’s a new bar and a waitress smells like his son. Afterwards, Tom is talking about Dubov opening a dating service when Diana starts crying.

Shawn is telling Richard about him and Isabelle. Richard is not happy. He wants Shawn to stay away from his daughter. Shawn can’t make that promise. Richard tells him it’s not a choice. Ross enters; their conversation can be heard in the hallway. And he happens to agree with Richard; this relationship is ill-advised at best. A relationship that Ross encouraged Isabelle to start.

Tom and Alana are in another dream world. The girl appears again, this time with a face. Maia tells Tom that he remembers her; think harder. She’s there because Tom brought her there. Alana ends the dream and they talk about the girl. Tom did not recognise Maia, but Maia acted as if he knew her.

Tom heads to see Diana, who has called in sick. She’s been cutting up magazines to make a girl’s face. Diana wonders if she’s going crazy. Tom says if she is, they both are. He explains the girl. Called Maia. And Diana shows him a wall of girls’ faces with the name ‘MAIA’ amongst them. They can’t find Maia in the case files. Tom says the only place they know she exists is the dream worlds. Diana wants Alana to take her there, to meet Maia. Tom says Maia will only be what Diana’s subconscious remembers. Diana thinks that might be enough.

Richard finds Isabelle playing the piano. She knows what it’s about and tells him the relationship will continue. There’s nothing to worry about.

Alana and Tom explain to Diana how it works. It’s up to Diana where she starts. Diana chooses her apartment. They arrive somewhere else. Maia opens a door and tells Diana to come in; it’s the adoption meeting from “Wake-up Call”. Maia hugs Diana at the end and Diana has a flood of memories of Maia. And of Sarah. When she comes out, she remembers everything. She tries to work out what happened, getting close to the truth. Diana tells Tom he has to believe her. Tom doesn’t remember anything. But he believes her.

In passing, it’s revealed just what changes the children made to the past. Significant ones. Not that anyone knows that. Diana and Tom want to find the children, but how can they get to someone who was taken out of time? Meanwhile, Isabelle is getting very scary.
