“The Kindred: Part 1” is episode eighteen of season four of Stargate: Atlantis.
Previously, in “Missing”, Teyla’s people, the Athosians, all disappeared from their colony on New Athos. In “The Seer”, Todd the Wraith offered to help stop the human form Replicators who were exterminating everything in the Pegasus galaxy; the best way of wiping out the Wraith was by destroying their food source – humans.
Teyla starts having visions featuring one of her people, Kanaan, the father of her unborn child, asking her for help. In addition, a virus is infecting multiple planets, with 30% death rate. The virus is familiar; in the season one episode “Poisoning the Well” the Hoff created a virus designed to kill the Wraith by making it fatal to feed on the infected, but the virus killed half of those who used it, and the Hoff were destroyed by the Wraith.
Todd has activated his subspace tracker again, and wants the Atlanteans help at stopping the virus that is killing both Wraith and humans. Michael, the Wraith who was turned into a human in the episode Michael, returns again.
There are too many strands to be adequately wrapped up in one episode, and there is a very unexpected surprise at the end. The story continues in the next episode, “The Kindred: Part 2”.
