“Level 13” is episode nine of season one of Powers.
This episode opens with Walker and Johnny Royalle standing outside Wolfe’s cell in the Shaft, getting up their nerve to enter. At the end of the previous episode, “Aha Shake Heartbreak”, Walker had agreed to help Johnny Royalle kill ‘Big Bad’ Wolfe, after Crispin’s mother was accidentally injured – and killed – during a fake attack on Zora by Red Hawk at a public event that was arranged by her publicist, and which Crispin had gate crashed (and therefore probably got his mother injured, although he’s blaming Walker, Retro Girl and Zora – the latter two he considers to be equally as guilty as Red Hawk. Even though they didn’t know about the stunt).
It then goes back seven days, with Walker telling Pilgrim that he agreed to help Royalle kill Wolfe, and that he needs her help to carry it out. Pilgrim thinks Walker has lost his mind, but then the latter points out that Royalle had invited him into a conspiracy to commit murder. Which is a crime. Walker is making out that it’s a ploy to arrest Johnny.
Walker also needs more help to get Royalle into the Shaft, where he can be captured by the Drainer in Wolfe’s cell and arrested, so Triphammer and Cross are also recruited. They are reluctant, until Walker tells them where Sway really comes from. Triphammer also tells Walker and Pilgrim about Black Swan – a potential Power with the ability to destroy the world. Wolfe is the current primary candidate.
Walker also tells Johnny Royalle that he’s working with the others, telling them that it’s all a ploy to arrest Royalle. Then he tells the others that he did so. Combined with Royalle using Simons as an inside man, it all gets very confusing as to who’s doing what and what their reasons are. Just who is playing who is not revealed until close to the end. Just before things really fall apart.
The timeline of this episode is also a bit random; there are clips from the preparations for the break-in interspersed with the actual break-in itself.
Wolfe is being held on Level 9. So just what is on Level 13?
