First Wave – The Believers

“The Believers” is episode twenty-two of season two of First Wave and the season finale.

A man and woman on a golf cart are driving through studios for The Phil Tennant Show. The man, Phil, is complaining to the woman, Gwen, that he started in the business as a serious investigative journalist; how come he’s gone tabloid? Gwen tells him the whole country has gone tabloid. Meanwhile, someone is chaining doors shuts and planting what look like bombs. There are large photos of Cade hung up on the set itself. As Gwen is filling Phil in on Cade’s actions, other people in the building are being hustled into a room by a man with a gun and locked in. Phil thinks Cade is a psychopath. Just as Cade and Eddie arrive; Eddie is wearing a bomb.

Cade’s attempts to prove his innocence have come to nothing. He tells Phil, Gwen and two others, Hal and Tina, that they are locked in, the exits sealed with detonators. If they do as Cade says, he will be out of there in 20 minutes. Cade heard Phil was doing a special on him and decided to join in. They are tied to chairs, though it doesn’t look like Gwen was fastened tightly enough. Cade is convinced that the Second Wave is about to begin and two years of trying to convince others have only resulted in a few dead aliens and a small group of believers regarded as lunatics. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Eddie is concerned as this is not his style; Cade says they have no other choice. They head to the control room where Eddie says they can go live with 200 million people, if everything goes to plan. Phil is telling the others that Cade is a killer. Tina has read Cade’s journals, though. Cade returns and finds that Gwen has escaped. She’s headed for the power to the satellite arrays and turns them off and pulls the plugs. Eddie gets a warning about power failure in the control room and contacts Cade, telling him what happened.

Outside, a police car has turned up, having received a warning about a potential hostage situation. They find a bomb on the door and call in reinforcements, including the bomb squad. Inside, Gwen has found another door and another bomb.

Eddie has a plan for the building and tells Cade where to go. Even when power is restored, it will take some time. Cade asks what else could go wrong. Then their police scanner tells them. Cade thinks he shouldn’t have asked. Eddie thinks they should head to the hills. Cade says they will have time; Eddie is in favour of living to fight another day. Cade thinks there may not be another. Eddie asks if this is the day they die. Cade doesn’t know.

Outside, Cain and another Gua have turned up, claiming to be from the Federal Security Bureau. They will coordinate all law enforcement activities. One of the cops objects; both get devices planted to the back of their necks. Then Cain has one call in the problem as just being a prank; there’s nothing wrong.

Hal is panicking and Phil says he will go on air with Cade. Conduct the interview in return for letting the others go. Cade is a serial killer and Phil doesn’t think he has any intention of letting the others go. Outside, the other Gua is concerned about cops turning up anyway. Cain has planted a virus that will slow down their response time. Cain is also not worried about Cade going on air; they have someone inside, someone Cade will never suspect.

Cade finds the power for the satellite arrays and plugs everything back in and turns it back on. He heads off to look for Gwen when his phone rings. It’s Cain, taunting him, saying that he is much more effective than Joshua. Cain tells Cade that Cade is going to die. But he wants the book of Nostradamus prophecies; evidently, he’s discovered that the one recovered in the previous episode, “Tomorrow”, is a fake.

Cade is having a crisis of faith again. The episode ends with a bit of a surprise and a cliff-hanger ending leading into season three and “Mabus”.
