Continuum – Second Last

“Second Last” is episode twelve of season two of Continuum.

In the previous episode, “Second Guess”, Jim’s attempt to get rid of both Sonya and Travis by setting it up so that they met really backfired, as they literally kissed and made up. So has Travis forgiven Sonya for trying to kill him in “Second Chances”? Really, if one had eliminated the other, there wouldn’t be many members of future Liber8 left in the present; all the others have been killed, died or been captured (Lucas has definitely lost it, although one of his imaginary Kagames was actually Julian, and is now in custody, and Garza is missing), with Kellog largely opting out, simply providing money. Alec decided to destroy Ark, but couldn’t do it himself, so gave the only copy to Emily. Who did not actually destroy it, but hadn’t passed it onto Escher by the end of the episode. She seemed rather upset. Kellog’s attempt to make common ground with Escher seems to have failed. With the capture of Lucas, Kiera also got all the pieces of the time travel device.

In the future, Kiera is attending a crime scene, a murder apparently committed by Liber8. The murderer was on camera, but they were using very advanced cloaking technology. The dead woman was working on something for Sadtech, using antimatter – which looks like it may have been the time travel device. Kiera thinks it might be connected to the execution, which would certainly suggest that it was the time travel device.

This episode opens with Kellog giving Sonya a briefcase full of money. She is not impressed; it’s play money, and Kellog says that she seems to be playing a game. He wants Sonya to deal with Escher, but she isn’t interested. The fact that Travis is now back with Sonya comes as a fairly unpleasant surprise to him. Kellog offers Travis something. He has access to the suit that belonged to Elena, Kiera’s partner from the future, which was found in “Second Skin”.

Kiera has tracked Gardiner to the lawyers where he was killed in “Second Listen”; the place is empty, cleaned out. Given that Lucas has clearly lost it and Jason is not entirely balanced, Kiera is concerned that time travel affects the mind, and that it might affect hers. She wants Alec to try and track down Gardiner by doing more hacking than he wants to do; he is examining the time travel device and it’s far more advanced than anything he can currently design. Which shouldn’t be a surprise, given that it was created over six decades in the future. He does think he can use it to send Kiera home though. With enough power. Carlos gets a call to come and check out a car. It’s Gardiner’s car, and he’s in the boot, dead. Very, very dead. There’s material on his body that seems to link Kiera to Liber8, which causes problems with Dillon and Gardiner’s boss, Lewis.

Emily wants to stop her arrangement with Escher; he wants her to bring the time travel device from Alec’s lab in exchange. Not that she knows that that’s what it is. Kellog has also found out Emily’s true name, past and the fact she works for Escher. Kellog gives her an ultimatum, or he will tell Alec the truth. So she decides to leave, and Alec decides to go with her, but he gets the DNA results from the test he did on Jason – when Alec took Flash in “Second Thoughts”, it looked like Jason could be his father. Which looks it could be true. Both Alec and Emily end up revealing secrets to each other.
