Continuum – Second Guess

“Second Guess” is episode eleven of season two of Continuum.

In the previous episode, “Second Wave”, it was revealed that one of the Liber8 members who went back in time, Curtis, had the tattoo that Escher stated in “Second Listen” identified the Freelancers. Escher himself is trying to poach Alec away from Kellog, but Kellog is also spying on Escher. Garza managed to escape from the police station but, before Travis could get to her, she was captured by the Freelancers herself. The current main figure of the Syndicate, the gang that Travis took control of, is also trying to get the gangs to more dubious about Travis.

As always opening in the future, this sees Kiera having her CMR being checked out; presumably, not long after it was installed. She wants to know what happens to her memories when they are recorded. The man checking out the implant tells her that there are rumours that, instead of the recorded memories being deleted as is supposed to happen, they are all archived. She is less than happy.

In the present there has been a major cyberterror attack affecting pretty much everyone with an internet connection on the mainland, with all the email passwords set to ‘Liber8′. This immediately causes problems in the precinct, as one officer attacks another – the formerly private emails and text messages show that one officer was sleeping with the other. It’s also just before the city elections, which Carlos’ friend Jim is running for. Dillon wants Betty to check everyone’s emails whilst they are open to look for Liber8 connections. Betty is not that happy about it, nor is Carlos.

Lucas has carried out the attack, but it’s apparently not the attack that Sonya wanted. Lucas is acting increasingly oddly, talking to invisible people in front of Sonya before he goes outside and speaks to Kagame in a van outside. Presumably, not a real Kagame – and this Kagame wants Lucas to take down the city. Lucas gets increasingly erratic throughout the episode. Sonya thinks it’s connected to the time travel.

With the emails open, Kiera wants Alec to look at Gardiner’s to find out what happened. She still doesn’t know that he was killed in “Second Listen”. Gardiner’s boss is also looking for him. Then someone hacks the traffic signals, causing accidents. There has been an uptick in violent attacks, probably as people read emails that they weren’t intended to do. The police also use a very heavy hand to go after anyone they think is connected to Liber8, or was even thinking about it. Or even looked at the wrong site or suggested Liber8 might have a point about the corporations. Julian/Theseus seems to be claiming responsibility, but he might not be responsible. Apparently Alec’s Ark project could also do the hacks. Julian then arrives at the precinct himself to say he wasn’t behind the attack. He says Alec is responsible.

Travis asks Jim to set up a meeting between him and Kiera. He wants to talk about a missing friend – Garza. The released emails cause Jim problems as well, and he decides to remove a couple of his.

Lots of views of scenes through various security cameras during this episode. Very Person of Interest.
