“Minute of Silence” is episode nine of season three of Continuum.
In the previous episode, “So Do Our Minutes Hasten”, Sonmanto used poison gas on Fermitas in order to lower the share price so that they could buy the company on the cheap. Using the gas resulted in the blame being put on Liber8. Although Kiera and Carlos dug up evidence that showed Sonmanto’s involvement, albeit rather indirectly, Dillon didn’t seem remotely interested. Is he convinced that Liber8 is responsible or does he simply not care? Or does he know otherwise? Betty, who had finally been rehabilitated after it was discovered that she was spying for Liber8 in “Minute Changes”, had shown at least some mutual interest in Kiera and Carlos’ pursuit of Sonmanto and had asked someone to help. It was a setup though and she and her contact were both gunned down on the street by Sonmanto’s operative. Betty is probably the biggest character to die in the series so far, as she has been in more episodes than any of the others.
This episode opens in the future with a man, some kind of doctor, going into a lab. There are various people in another room who are going to undergo citizen chip extraction. This involves removing a chip from each individual’s arm – without anaesthetic, and it looks painful. It also looks like Kiera is there as well.
Back in the present/past a man wakes up, disoriented, in a long term care facility. He’s been unconscious for two months after being clipped by a truck and doesn’t remember his name. He does remember a name though – Kiera Cameron.
The funeral for Betty has been held and Kiera, Carlos and Dillon are returning to the station after it. Carlos goes in to see Dillon; he wants to investigate Betty’s murder, but Dillon says that they are not allowed to investigate the case. It will be done by an external investigation team. It appears that Dillon may have had to do a deal to prevent Betty’s Liber8 flirtation from coming to light. Carlos isn’t happy and is willing to investigate without official permission.
Kiera goes to the hospital to see the John Doe. He doesn’t recognise her, and she doesn’t recognise him either. Nor can she bring up any data on the man; he doesn’t exist. With the facility needing the bed, they want to release him into Kiera’s care. Otherwise he’s probably going to be dumped on her anyway. Kiera is curious about him, given that it should be impossible for anyone to delete themselves from the local databases as much as he has. John Doe is having strange flashes of images and feels he doesn’t fit in – because he’s from the future.
Carlos, who along with Kiera has been told to take the day off, asks Alec Two to come see him. He shows Alec Two the body of Kiera Two; Original Kiera hadn’t told the latter about the death of Kiera Two. Neither is terribly happy.
A high tech thief with a penchant for jumping over and off things breaks into a company and steals what is later described as an active camouflage system, which bends the light around an object to make it invisible (just like Kiera’s CPS suit does). This is the third heist of its type.
Kellog is suing Alec Two, as the two had a contract which the latter has breached. Alec Two is also trying to get Halo to work properly, but Kellog is also poaching people from his team. As Kellog points out, it’s Sadtech that is linked to Alec in the future, not Piron. The thief from earlier breaks into Piron as well – and steals Halo.
Kiera’s relationship with Carlos is still shaky and her relationship with Alec Two has taken a hit again.
A complicated episode with multiple threads, not all of which seem to be resolved by the end.
