The 4400 – Being Tom Baldwin

“Being Tom Baldwin” is episode three of season three of The 4400.

Tom is at NTAC; he hands over his gun and magazine before heading to see T.J. Kim, captured in the previous episode, “The New World, Part 2”. Diana arrives at Burkhoff’s place; he’s suffering from a migraine, but he’s been getting them for years. He’s also doubled his injections to six. He can guarantee that he’s not the only one trying. Someone will produce a serum to allow non-4400s to gain powers. The question is who is going to do it and who controls it. Diana hopes someone with a high sense of responsibility. Burkhoff doubts the people she works for qualify. Diana never knew he was a cynic. Burkhoff is willing to pay the price. And Diana is there.

Isabelle walks into a lake, fully clothed. A man in a rowboat finds her body floating in the water. She revives when he turns her over.

Tom is with T.J., going over what she’s told again. He starts fiddling under the table. She asks what he’s doing. He pulls out a silenced gun and shoots her before wiping the gun and leaving it on the table, then leaving.

Diana arrives to find people heading out. Jarvis explains what happened and that Tom has already gone. Diana thinks there must be an explanation. T.J. didn’t use her ability, though; she had too much promicin inhibitor in her system. Tom isn’t picking up. Diana wants to talk to him first.

Shawn is now with Isabelle. She says she wasn’t trying to drown herself; she doesn’t even know if she can. She was trying to teach herself to swim. In clothes, because she’s never worn a bathing suit before and didn’t know what to get. And feels she’s too old to ask for help. She keeps reading of all the rites of passage to adulthood, all of which she missed out on. She made a list. Shawn says there’s a pool at the centre; he can probably teach her the basics.

Richard is packing Lily’s urn and a suitcase when Isabelle asks him when he learnt to swim. And that Shawn said he’d teach her. Richard is going to be gone overnight. Isabelle wants to come with, but realises Richard wants to be alone with Lily when he says goodbye.

Tom is in the bathroom at home when Diana enters with a gun. She explains what happened. Tom was at home; he was supposed to have a conference call with Kyle’s attorneys but they cancelled. He wasn’t at work. Even though two dozen people saw him there. Diana suggests maybe he blacked out like Kyle, maybe something else. He has to come in. Tom wants to get dressed first. Diana leaves the bathroom; naturally, Tom climbs out the window. He drives off and a young man in a car calls someone, saying Tom got away.

Diana tells Jarvis what happened. Tom calls Diana whilst they’re speaking. He isn’t coming in, because Kyle didn’t pull the trigger on Jordan Collier but he’s still in jail. Tom is going to prove he didn’t do it and wants Diana to see what she can find. She heads to see Marco, who suggests treating it like any other case and investigate the facts. They go to get the tapes from the security cameras in the detention wing. Only to find out they were apparently handled to Marco an hour ago.

Shawn is with Isabelle in the pool at the centre. He thinks it’s cold. She thinks she can make it warmer. She’s right. Other 4400s can only do one thing. Isabelle can do more than one.

Alana is locking up when Tom calls her over. He’s dressed like the Tom who shot T.J., though. Tom is explaining what happened and tries grabbing Alana as Tom rings her. The real Tom explains that there’s an impersonator and proves he knows Alana. Tom gets there and the impostor runs off. Tom follows only to find the imposter gone and the kid from outside his house there, not that Tom recognises him. When Alana comes out, Tom realised the kid was the impersonator. Both realise he must be a 4400. T.J. was the only member of the Nova Group in custody.

Tom heads to see Shawn as NTAC arrive to see his database of 4400s. The problem is finding someone who, somehow, can look like anyone. Burkhoff isn’t doing that well, but his injections are starting to have an effect. Positive as well as negative.
