“Join or Die” is episode thirteen of season three of The 100.
In the previous episode, “Demons”, another person was killed, Sinclair, by the last of the Mountain Men, Emerson. Emerson himself was killed when Clarke stuck A.L.I.E. 2.0 on him. The Flame is definitely fatal to those that aren’t Nightbleeders – i.e., those descended from the Beka and the gene therapy she carried out on herself.
Jaha had arrived at Polis and, because Murphy’s girlfriend Emori had joined the City of Light, knew everything that Murphy told her. Including the fact that Ontari was not the genuine Commander as she lacks the Flame. So he made her an offer to make her genuine – by accepting Alie. Which she did. So now Polis is effectively under the command of Alie too, although said control seems limited to Ontari at the moment. Frankly, having Alie in charge rather than the murderously erratic Ontari seems preferable for now. Although not for Murphy.
This episode opens with Pike, who was captured by the Grounders, with Bellamy’s help, and Kane arriving in Polis. Pike is not that impressed or surprised to find pools of blood on the ground. He also doesn’t expect the new Commander to be interested in peace. Ontari certainly wasn’t, but what will happen now she’s been taken over by Alie? They are rather surprised to find people from Arkadia there, along with Jaha. The Grounder who leads the party is told by Ontari to take one of Alie’s chips, as are the others, which they do willingly, so Alie has probably got almost complete control of Polis as well as Arkadia now. Pike naturally refuses to take the chip, as does Kane. However, Alie needs Kane in order to find Clarke, not Pike, so although both are taken away, the outlook is rather less rosy for Pike. Abby says she will get Kane to give the information – by tricking him any way necessary. Just because Alie wants Kane alive doesn’t mean she isn’t willing to inflict a lot of pain on him – especially as taking a chip removes pain. Alie is also willing, as she’s shown before, to threaten those people care about.
The episode then goes back 6 months to the Ark, with Kane bringing Pike to a meeting with Jaha and Abby. Pike is being asked to teach the 100 (except Clarke, who is in solitary) a course in wilderness survival. Pike wants to know why they’re being sent down 100 years before the ground is going to be inhabitable, but Jaha says it’s need to know. Pike has only two weeks to get everyone ready. There are clips as Kane teaches the members of the 100 Earth skills throughout the episode. Murphy is still a pain even on the Ark and he and the rest of the 100 aren’t exactly interested in learning. Although they are seen using at least some of those skills in the episode. They’ve been on the ground for only slightly under 6 months. Quite a bit has happened in that time.
Clarke and the rest are heading towards where Luna is supposed to be, using a map that Octavia found in Lincoln’s journal. Jasper asks just how Luna is going to react when they turn up. Which is a good point, especially as she was exiled. They find the village where Luna is supposed to be really quickly, but all that’s there are rocks. This is not good. Octavia is still not happy with Bellamy because of Lincoln’s death in “Stealing Fire”. The supposed village is just a means of contacting Luna though.
In Polis, Kane is locked up with Murphy, and Indra, as well as some others who have refused the chip. Indra is really not happy over Pike’s murder of 300 of her people in “Watch the Thrones” and plans to kill him very slowly. Which she starts doing, even though they are locked up. Murphy takes Pike’s final lesson on the Ark and makes use of it.
Finally, we see somewhere that has appeared in the opening credits all season.
