Sanctuary – Next Tuesday

“Next Tuesday” is episode eight of season two of Sanctuary.

This episode opens with Magnus and Will in a helicopter that is spinning out of control. There is a tentacle waving around in the back area and the helicopter finally clips its rotors on part of an oil rig, snapping them. The episode then goes back 11 hours earlier.

Will wants to go to a conference in Reykjavik that he’s been looking forward to for a while. Magnus wants his help capturing a very rare Abnormal, called a vampire squid – which is apparently quite docile, very intelligent and often prey for other creatures – that has been discovered in the Gulf of Mexico.

The other teams are busy, Henry is surfing in Tasmania with Bigfoot (who is not dead; his death was faked in the previous episode, “Veritas”, as part of a complicated plot by Magnus – which involved essentially making herself temporarily insane – to flush out a treacherous telepath) and Kate lacks SCUBA experience to do this. Magnus then wants Will to stay behind in charge as she has to go to a meeting with a UN liaison in Berlin. Will really wants to go to the conference, and is not happy about this.

The helicopter from earlier is now resting in water deep within the central drilling well of a decommissioned oil rig. The crash was caused by the supposedly docile Abnormal – the owner of the tentacle from earlier (this is the second time – the first being in “Kush” that Will has been in a crash with Magnus, which he points out. Although those are the only two times since the invention of powered flight that she’s actually crashed). The radio is broken, the well blocks the transponder, their SCUBA gear is missing and their flight plan was false. Getting out is going to be a problem. To make matters worse, the ‘docile’ Abnormal has returned and it’s acting anything but docile and seems to have a particular hatred for Will.

This entire episode is just based around Will and Magnus in and around water in the drilling well whilst being attacked by an angry Abnormal. It does give them plenty of opportunity to talk about handling a personal life whilst working for the Sanctuary network and the importance of priorities.
