“Edward” is episode eight of season one of Sanctuary.
This episode opens with a woman standing over the body of a dead man, whilst a teenage boy (the titular Edward) is drawing something – and he’s doing the drawing whilst not looking at it.
Will gets called in to the case, which is an apparent suicide, by Detective Joe Kavanaugh, the policeman he worked with (and who had a rather low opinion of him) in “Sanctuary for All: Part 1”. Supposedly, the dead man threatened the boy – his son – with a shotgun, before turning it onto himself.
Edward apparently has Asperger’s, as well as an incredible talent for drawing. He can draw perfectly from memory, without looking at what he is doing, in a minute. Will is certain that what is supposed to have happened isn’t what actually happened, and Magnus wants to examine Edward’s talents. The couple also had another son, who went missing some time before. It looks like the father was abusive, and either the son or the mother killed him out of fear. But that would be too simple.
In the previous episode, “The Five”, it was revealed that Henry was turning into something, something that looks rather like a werewolf. It seems Magnus found him and took him in when he was just a boy. Henry is terrified of what he is going to turn into. Bigfoot tries to comfort him, but Henry doesn’t want to turn into a monster.
One of Edward’s drawings of monsters shows an Unas from Stargate SG-1; another a Wraith from Stargate: Atlantis.
