Powers – Hell Night

“Hell Night” is episode three of season two of Powers.

In the previous episode, “Funeral of the Century”, Calista revealed her powers to the public at RetroGirl’s funeral, and she was also dressed in one of RetroGirl’s old (and really quite skimpy) costumes. It seems Calista can fly, has super strength and some sort of eye power. Walker has effectively decided to help her become accustomed to her abilities as well.

At the funeral, Walker saw someone with Krispin’s face. Given that Krispin was dead, this was odd. Walker managed to chase him down, and it was THX, the second in command of the Hacks, who it appears had stolen Triphammer’s Drainer whilst appearing as Krispin and then used it to kill RetroGirl. At least, that’s what Walker arrested him for. Which does beg the question – Why show up at a funeral wearing the face of a dead person where you will be spotted? That’s either very stupid or something more is going on.

This episode opens with a news report about ‘Hell Night’ – the city is going to have a curfew from dusk to dawn as it’s believed that the violence which started at RetroGirl’s funeral the previous day is going to get worse. A gang war is expected to kick off between the Quantums and the Hacks. There are good odds that the entire Powers Division will be dead by dawn. Cutter’s opinion is to let the gangs kill each other. One of the news reporters. Nicole, wants to ensure that there is violence, even if none appears to be happening.

Walker is getting angry because he says Cross won’t reopen the RetroGirl case. He’s not listening very carefully, because Cross has just told him to do that. And he is running it, with only Pilgrim helping him, or even knowing what is going on. They aren’t on call for the night’s mayhem, unless Armageddon happens. Cross wants Walker to find out what THX knows and to tell him first. Walker and Pilgrim seek out Triphammer’s help, because he is, after all, the scientific genius, and THX is part machine. THX says he was paid to steal the Drainer, but didn’t kill RetroGirl. He doesn’t know who paid him either. Some enhanced enquiries get a bit more information. Unfortunately, it look like someone really didn’t want THX interrogated, and the problems with a wireless connection are shown when his head explodes.

Cross tells Walker that they have recovered, and processed, the car that Krispin and Chaotic Chick were in shortly before it blew up in “Caracas 1967”, and linked it to Krispin. Which creates some more questions, but leads Walker and Pilgrim to their trail.

RetroGirl’s former agency are considering going after Calista financially for wearing their IP – RetroGirl’s old costume. The boss, Craig, gets a text message from someone unknown saying that they want her, so he says they should make as much money as possible. Zora asks Calista to meet with her, to warn her, about what might happen regarding her image and how the media will take control of it. There is some friction between the two of them.

As the city starts going to pieces during the night and violence envelops it, Super Shock decides to come out of retirement and a previously hidden player shows his face.
