Mutant X – The Assault

“The Assault” is episode twenty-two of season three of Mutant X and the season and series finale.

Sanctuary is under attack and Brennan and Shalimar are fleeing to the Helix from armed intruders who are resistant to his powers. A rocket blasts Shalimar off a balcony and the episode then goes back 12 hours.

Lexa is speaking to her Dominion contact, who tells her that, before Adam disappeared, he was working on mutants’ shortened lifespan. His reports suggested he had still not solved this. He lied, and not just about his death. Yes, the Dominion knows about Mutant X’s contacts with Adam. Adam had calculated an expiry date for each mutant, a time when their unstable genetics would result in their destruction. Jesse passed that point two weeks ago. It seems he’s cured. The Dominion wants Lexa to deliver Jesse to them. His life is a small price to pay to save all other mutants. Including Lexa. She can choose one member of her team, or all of them.

Lexa is copying a file, then removes her commlink. Jesse startles her and, when Lexa leaves, he finds her commlink. Shalimar and Brennan are in a bar and are finally going to resolve the UST between them when Jesse interrupts. They need to get back.

In a facility, the Dominion Council head is shown into a room and tells someone, the Creator, that Jesse is being brought in. The other, working on some sort of hologram, says that Adam eluded him but the fruits of his labour won’t.

Shalimar and Brennan arrive at Sanctuary. He couldn’t use the commlinks as he doesn’t know if the Dominion had broken into it. Lexa was doing something and Jesse looked into it. She downloaded some of Adam’s private files, which Jesse didn’t even know existed. Research into the instability of mutant genetic structure. Shalimar says Adam never solved that. Jesse says that might not be true; according to the Dominion, he should be dead. Something Adam did worked. But he doesn’t know about the others. Jesse is concerned about Lexa. Shalimar asks if Jesse can get a fix on her commlink. He picks it up. The moment he saw it, he tracked her using satellite cameras.

Lexa is meeting her commlink and gives him the data. She isn’t giving him Jesse. Then people like those attacking Sanctuary appear; they are protected against her powers, too. Shalimar and Brennan show, but Lexa has a subdermal governor implanted and is captured.

Lexa is brought in front of the Dominion Council. They say that some of what happened with Genomex was unfortunate., but went a long way to accomplishing their objectives. The Dominion was founded to shape scientific evolution, but realised they have a greater responsibility. To direct human physical evolution as well. Yes, they’ve gone to the dark side. Adam may have worked on Lexa, too, so they will examine her DNA. If he hasn’t; well, her expiry date is rapidly approaching.

At Sanctuary, Jesse agrees that he can probably find Adam; the Dominion was after Adam’s information, and he’s the only one who knows how to connect it. Plus, Shalimar would like to know why Jesse is still alive.

At the Dominion facility, Lexa demonstrates to her guard that she doesn’t need powers to be dangerous. She then loads a virus into the Dominion’s system.

Brennan is looking through their medical files to see if they got the same treatments when Shalimar shows. But Adam did so many treatments it’s impossible to tell. Shalimar tells him that the precog who was working with the links in “The Prophecy” said that one of them to fall. They should finish what they started earlier.

Lexa nearly gets to the Creator, but is captured. Shalimar and Brennan find Jesse; he knows something has changed. He traced Adam to an organisation that was folded into NASA 20 years ago. Except for an abandoned airfield that still has one building being used.

The others head to find Adam, but the Dominion is also looking for them. Jesse gets captured, too. Adam decides to take the fight directly to the Dominion, which Lexa is also doing.

Though this is the series finale, it unfortunately has a cliff-hanger ending. The show was renewed for a fourth season, but cancelled after Fireworks Entertainment, the show’s producer, was dismantled after running into financial problems.
