Mutant X – Lest He Become

“Lest He Become” is episode twenty-two of season two of Mutant X and the season finale.

Jesse and Brennan enter an alley; they are heading for a meeting. Brennan says that, as far as the people they are meeting know, this is going down as expected. Jesse wishes they knew what they were expecting. Emma and Shalimar are watching nearby through a camera. The two men they meet are expecting someone called Haines. Brennan wants to know why the two want medical records; perhaps they should get a piece of the action. They’re told they will get out alive. Brennan demonstrates his powers; unfortunately, the other two have powers as well and take Brennan and Jesse down and, when Emma and Shalimar enter, them too. There were no medical records and the attackers leave.

At Sanctuary, Emma is concerned that they were not just mutants but mutants with powers they’ve never seen before. The camera being used was being worn by Brennan on his forehead. Adam watches the demonstration of the others’ powers and says he was obviously not the only scientist working on this. If they succeed, made to order mutants will be the least of their problems.

Haines himself then calls. He’s worried and plans to head to the police. Adam tells him the police can’t protect Haines, but Haines hangs up. Jesse has got Haines location and Adam tells Brennan and Shalimar to go there and convince Haines to come with them. Or kidnap him. The two from the meet are already there, though, and want the information.

Brennan is concerned about Adam keeping secrets. There can’t be more than a handful of people capable of this sort of genetic manipulation and Adam knows them all. When they arrive at Haines’ car, he’s just sitting in it. Shalimar wonders what he’s doing there. Being dead. Shalimar spots a security camera and tells Jesse, who hacks into it and gets the plate from the killers’ car. It’s registered to a company called Naxon. A name Shalimar recognises; it’s her father’s company.

Back at Sanctuary, Shalimar says her father is a creep, not a killer. She doesn’t know much about Naxon; her father took her to the office a couple of times but tried not to let people meet her because he was embarrassed by her. Adam says Naxon was a low-level chemical company and Shalimar says her father hated genetic research because it made her different. And for her parents, it was all about appearance, being normal. Adam wants Shalimar to go into her father’s company. She’s not pleased with that idea. Her parents threw her into a psychiatric institution when she was 10, as they couldn’t cope with her powers. When the orderlies couldn’t manage to sedate her, they would send four men to beat her. Her father knew and told them to keep it up, if it made Shalimar normal. One night, Shalimar got her own back.

Shalimar does call her father and ask to meet him, though. She heads to his company which has grown a lot since she last saw it. She’s got a camera as well which Jesse is using to monitor security. Shalimar’s father, Nicholas Fox, is pleased to see her, and believes he deserves how she treats him on first arrival, given what he did to her. He and her mother split up a couple of years after Shalimar left. Nicholas blames Adam for everything.

Adam has got into Nicholas’s private files and wants to confirm some names. When Emma pulls him up on using the word confirm, Adam denies that he meant that. Emma asks if Adam wants her to pretend she believes him. He wants her to stay out of his head.

There’s something behind very high security at Naxon, and that’s where they want to get into. Adam is keeping secrets, some of which come out. Nicholas Fox is working with someone else, and you can pretty much guess who. For once, there is a cliff-hanger ending leading into season three and “Into the Moonless Night”.
