“Lazarus Syndrome” is episode fifteen of season one of Mutant X.
Brennan and Emma are in a club. Brennan is looking at a girl, but Emma tells him she’s not interested. He goes over anyway, only for the girl’s boyfriend to join her. He returns to the bar as Emma orders another, non-alcoholic, drink. This results in a discussion over whether Emma is uptight or easy going. The drink, the bartender informs Emma, has been paid for by a man standing just behind her. Said man, Caleb, asks Emma for a dance. Brennan remains at the bar, but glances back at the dancefloor to discover Emma and Caleb gone.
They are heading out and Emma asks Caleb his full name; Caleb Mathias. She says she feels she’s known him her whole life. They kiss, and then Caleb suggests another – and starts sucking something from her. Brennan arrives at this point and kicks Caleb away and drives him off. Emma thinks Caleb was trying to kill her.
At the Sanctuary, Adam is told what happened. Emma says it felt as if Caleb was sucking the life out of her. Adam is going to check the database and wants Jesse and Brennan to return to the club. Emma insists she is going with.
Eckhart is speaking to the minion of the week, Ms Fries, about six promising New Mutant recruits turning up dead in the past five months. Fries, after mentioning one theory, says that the killer is probably a New Mutant serial killer; the victims were preyed upon. The killer knows what he wants and lures his victims. He’s handsome, charismatic and charming, and she’s investigating a possible suspect.
The bartender at the club claims to know nothing and remember nothing. Afterwards, Emma tells the other that the bartender is scared. They start looking around and Caleb is watching them. Shalimar hasn’t found Caleb in the database, but she has discovered that six women have disappeared in the vicinity of the club in the last five months. All young, attractive women. Brennan is informed and told to bring Emma back.
Before Brennan can leave, Caleb opens a roller shutter door to get him to come out and fight again. Without Brennan using his powers. Fries is watching in a GSA car, which then drives at them. Jesse pushes Brennan out of the war, then phases out. Caleb is hit by the car and killed.
Fries tells Eckhart that Caleb is dead. Dr. Harrison – returning again – is working on Eckhart. He would like the remains of Caleb to perform an autopsy on. Eckhart suggests that the next time Fries does a hit and run, she picks up the body before running.
Emma is meditating when she senses something. There’s no-one there. Then Caleb appears. She runs away from him and he appears in front of her. Emma runs and tells Adam and Shalimar, but Caleb is gone. Emma thinks she and Caleb were connected by the kiss, and he thinks he’s still alive and will kill again. The others don’t, but Adam wants the morgue’s surveillance records checking anyway, given Emma’s psionic powers. Emma leaves to go to the club and Shalimar follows her.
The morgue’s records show Caleb being brought in, very dead. Then leaving again, with Fries, rather less dead. The reason Caleb couldn’t be found in the database is because he was listed as being dead. It seems he can come back from the dead, so how do you stop someone who can heal mortal injuries?
