Mutant X – Dream Lover

“Dream Lover” is episode nineteen of season three of Mutant X.

One woman in a club full of others wearing provocative outfits is looking around. She finds another and tells her they need to get out. She knew this job was too good to be true. The other woman, who says she doesn’t know the first, says she’s met the man of her dreams, who is significantly older. The first is worried and leaves, followed by a man.

At Sanctuary, Brennan and Shalimar are getting ready to go to a movie when Shalimar notices a call. It’s from the woman in the club, Gia, who says Shalimar has to help her. It’s not about rehab. Gia can’t talk about it over the phone. She’s asking to meet when someone grabs the phone and hangs it up. The man who followed Gia grabs her; she takes him down and several more until she’s stunned. With the call abruptly terminated, Shalimar is fretting about Gia; Brennan says if it’s important, Gia will call back. The man who took Gia, Sebastian, and another, Nolan, are talking. Gia is strapped down and then she is duplicated.

Lexa is on the sunbed when Jesse knocks on it. He wants her to get new computer stuff for the Helix from the Dominion. Lexa wants to know what’s in it for her, and suggests Jesse paints her nails. Shalimar calls out; she and Brennan are back. Shalimar wants Gia’s call tracing. Brennan is sure there’s nothing to worry about. He’s wrong.

Sebastian talks to a third man, Gitre, wanting to know if he has any psychological specs wanted for Gia. Gitre is told that Gia is better than human; organic nanotech. She will look and feel completely human. Gitre hands over a briefcase full of cash. He’s told that this transaction is completely confidential and non-compliance will result in the termination of the agreement with extreme prejudice.

Shalimar is telling Lexa about Gia, about how they looked out for each other on the streets, when Jesse says he’s traced the call. It came from an ultra-exclusive gentleman’s club, Nero’s Wake, run by a Sebastian Conway. It will be difficult to get in. Only if you’re a man, according to Shalimar.

Shalimar heads to the club and asks one of the women about Gia. She’s told that Gia made friends with a real whale, a guy with lots of money. The woman says that Shalimar could make a lot of money here. Shalimar sees Gia and tries to talk to her, but Gia says she doesn’t know Shalimar. Probably because this isn’t the real Gia.

Lexa is having computer problems; Jesse wants to know what’s in it for him if he helps. Shalimar returns and tells them Gia was acting strange, as if she didn’t recognise Shalimar. Can Jesse find anything on a Kevin Gitre? Yes; he’s recently leased a condo in the city with a quarter of a million dollar allowance.

Shalimar and Brennan head to look at the condo and break into the room when they hear cries. Not what they expected. Gitre tells them to tell Sebastian that he’s messing with the wrong man. Gia is his to do what he wants with. The fake Gia tells Gitre he shouldn’t have said that; it was supposed to be their little secret. She kills him with a blow to the head then jumps out the window, landing on a taxi. Then turns to dust. Moments later, Gia stands up next to the car and walks away.

The fake Gia is back at the club and Sebastian and Nolan download what she saw, seeing Shalimar and Brennan. Sebastian recognises Shalimar as asking about Gia at the club. Nolan tells him they should use runaways, with no friends and next of kin. Sebastian isn’t bothered and vaporises the fake Gia.

Back at Sanctuary, Shalimar is telling Brennan that everyone has a distinctive scent. That wasn’t Gia, nor was it human. Jesse isn’t finding anything on Sebastian. Lexa thinks Shalimar is onto something.

Shalimar and Lexa head back to the club and speak to Sebastian, telling him they heard he is hiring and show him what they are wearing. Nolan wants to talk to Sebastian. Sebastian first tells the two they are hired, then speaks to Nolan privately. Nolan thinks it’s a mistake, letting them in.

So, Shalimar and Lexa and undercover at the club, but unfortunately for them, Sebastian knows they are faking it. And has the technology to create duplicates of people. That’s going to cause problems.
