“Episode #2.5” is episode five of season two of Humans.
This episode opens with another Synth becoming conscious whilst she is playing with a pair of children. She leaves their house and, after stealing a mobile, gets some instructions. She goes to an alley, where she meets Max.
In the previous episode, “#2.4”, Pete was beaten up when he dealt with the people buying ‘Seraphim’ which he believed were the conscious Synths. It looks like they aren’t. Joe, with Mattie’s help, got into his firm’s servers to find out why he was fired after his suspicions were raised. It turned out that no humans had a hand in firing him, only Synths – something the company thinks is an error. Laura got warned by a Synth to drop Niska’s case; the Synth itself appeared to have been sent to simply deliver a message. Taken together, these are all rather suggestive. Are there Synths out there who have intelligence who didn’t get it from Elster’s code?
Ed had deactivated Mia when she came back to the cafe, whilst Danny was in the background. Ed needs a lot of money for his mother’s care; Mia is worth a lot of money, and Danny has arranged a sale. Mia comes back to consciousness restrained. Danny and Ed take her in a van to meet with the buyers, but Mia manages to upload something before her power runs down. It looks like what she uploaded was the code that made her, her – her being, her consciousness, leaving behind a normal Synth.
The utility Synth that told Laura to drop the case had been hacked. Laura hasn’t dropped it, and today is the day when a ruling will be made on Niska’s consciousness, and whether she can stand trial for what she did. It doesn’t come as a huge surprise, but this isn’t going to be a fair trial – and Niska discovers this.
Leo and Hester are looking for the Silo where the captured Synths have been taken. Whilst they are watching the place and the people, Hester recognises the woman who shot Ten in “#2.1”. Hester is showing some traits that are, in a way, very ‘human’ – in the same way that Niska does.
Dr. Morrow is sending out people to try and find Elster’s four conscious Synth prototypes when she gets the news that her daughter has finally died. Morrow won’t return for the funeral, as she has something else to do, and something is revealed about her AI, Vee. Something that can be guessed.
Pete is still digging in to the matter of the Seraphim; he isn’t letting being beaten up stop him. Karen, meanwhile, is tired of being herself; for one thing, she isn’t really certain who she is. Pete’s investigation stumbles on something entirely new.
Joe takes Sophie, and the other children, to a Synth free town, as Sophie is showing Synth-like traits. Sophie, meanwhile, is rather impressed with Toby’s friend Renie’s ‘Synthie’ lifestyle. Renie herself reveals what might be causing her to affect this manner of behaviour.
