“You Say You Want an Evolution” is episode six of season two of Extant.
Molly and JD are looking at Molly’s DNA, as in the previous episode, “The New Frontier”, she used what appeared to be the hybrids’ power on a man. Molly’s DNA is a triple helix. Not double. She says she’s changing, becoming a crossbreed species. JD asks how that’s possible. Molly wonders if it was when she was exposed to the spores; JD suggests the GSE may have done it. Molly thinks it might be the baby. Mother and child share cells during pregnancy; foetal cells can remain in the mother for decades after, altering her. Leftover alien cells may have changed her DNA. To know if it can be reversed, she needs to know how far it’s gone. Molly needs JD to extract her bone marrow.
Molly has a lot of hybrid cells, but she still has human ones. She may be able to get them to fight back, but needs to go to the lab at the GSE. Then remembers she’s supposed to be seeing Ethan as well. JD found proof that John’s accident wasn’t an accident, and warns Molly the GSE is not her friend. Toby is not. If they find out she’s part alien… Molly knows she’s dead. Then JD checks his phone; he’d missed a doctor’s appointment with Kelsey.
Julie is cleaning when Molly arrives, early. Molly just wants a couple of minutes with Ethan. She tells Ethan that she’s sick, and they’ll have to stay apart. But she’s working hard to get better.
There’s briefing being held at the GSE and Toby says that the hybrids have changed their body temperature to match humans. He’s asked how the Humanich was able to find the hybrid. Lucy says her name is Lucy and she can answer the question. Humans emit delta waves when sleeping, but the hybrid was doing so whilst awake. The hybrids have gone underground, so more Humanichs are wanted. And Toby says he has news about Dr Woods and the virus.
Molly arrives and Toby grabs her; they need to talk. Lucy scans Molly and gets an inconclusive reading as to whether or not she’s human or hybrid. Which is likely accurate. Toby congratulates Molly in his office; Nate ran with the breakthrough Molly made. they’ve finished the virus and are gearing up for mass production to wipe out the hybrids.
JD arrives home to find his ex there. They talk about Kelsey. It does not go well.
At the lab, Ethan has a new toy car. He tells Lucy that Julie bought it; Lucy says humans buy stuff to make them forget when they do something wrong. Soon, though, there will be a lot more Humanichs. Their family is expanding. Ethan mentions Molly being ill. Lucy suggests Molly is lying. Humans lie; it’s in their DNA. Lucy knows that there’s something off with Molly. Lucy is becoming very worrying.
Anna is meeting with Julie; she wants a hundred Humanichs like Lucy. Julie is concerned about skipping the protocols that John put in place; they were in place for a reason. Something Lucy may be demonstrating. Anna says John isn’t there. And Julie remembers calling Anna, in “Change Scenario”, saying there was a problem with John. Which Anna said she’d handle. Shortly afterwards, John was dead.
Molly tries to find the spores at the GSE but is told by Nate they’ve been taken to produce the virus. She starts downloading the DNA data from the computer, but a security protocol stops her completing it. Molly leaves, using her power on the security guards who try to stop her, and calls JD. It seems she used her ability without meaning to.
Molly needs to find the Offspring, to get a sample of his blood to help her. She’s also concerned because a virus that wipes out the hybrids will likely kill her as well.
