Extant – Arms and the Humanich

“Arms and the Humanich” is episode eight of season two of Extant.

JD is in his car, as his daughter Kelsey was taken by the GSC in the previous episode, “The Other”, when helicopters pass overhead. At the compound, Molly is talking to Terra, who wants to teach her how read minds – Molly doesn’t want to – when Adhu enters and says there’s a problem. Helios didn’t return. They hear helicopters and two fly overhead and land.

Molly says they have to evacuate but Ares tells everyone to stop. They don’t need to run. If they fight, they will win. Humans are inferior; their powers have proven that. He and others stride towards some incoming soldiers and use their powers. Which have absolutely no effect. Molly remembers Ethan talking about his sister, Lucy, and realise that the soldiers are not human. She shouts to everyone to run as the Humanichs open fire, then deploy gas grenades.

Molly runs inside and tries to get Terra to come out of hiding as Lucy enters. Lucy shoots at Terra, but Molly intervenes. Lucy points the gun at Molly and says this will only hurt for a second. As JD shoots her. Lucas carries lucy away as the Humanichs leave, with a lot of dead hybrids on the ground.

JD removes the bullet from Molly and treats the wound, though Adhu says he doesn’t need to. As for the hybrids, some got away, some didn’t. He knows those that survived are out there somewhere. JD wonders why they didn’t finish the job. Then Adhu coughs up blood, effectively answering; the grenades had the virus.

Lucy is rushed into the lab. Julie tells Charlie it’s horrible. Not what happened to Lucy; what Julie has done to John’s vision. Finally, she’s noticed. Ethan comes in and asks Lucy who did this to her. She tells him Molly did.

Molly is in JD’s car with Adhu in the back; she is also not happy about what’s been done with the Humanichs. She doesn’t know if she’ll end up like Adhu either; everyone is affected differently. They arrive at JD’s house and find his ex, Dorothy, there. JD admits to Dorothy that it looks bad. Taking Kelsey was just a scare tactic. As to what he’s gotten into; it’s complicated.

Dorothy parked and walked in, following JD’s security protocols. She’s a judge and merely being there makes her an accessory. JD may be a lot of things, but a terrorist isn’t one of them. JD says it isn’t him they’re after. And he isn’t going to turn Molly and Adhu in.

Molly is with Adhu when Dorothy enters. Dorothy grabs a gun when she sees Adhu’s eyes glowing. Molly uses her own powers on Dorothy to get her to stop. She says it’s hard for Dorothy to understand what’s happening. An understatement.

Ethan is asking Julie about Lucy, and says she wouldn’t want a human working on her, because they can’t be trusted. Julie asks why he says that. Because Molly hurt Lucy. Julie says that Lucy suffered quite a bit of damage and she may not have the facts right. Given other behaviour from Lucy, it’s at least as likely she’s simply lying. Ethan asks if Julie would hurt Lucy. Not intentionally. Good. Because if she did, Ethan doesn’t know what he’d do.

JD takes Dorothy a drink. When he starts to explain what’s going on, she decides she needs it. He says the GSC slaughtered everyone. He couldn’t stand by again. Molly is lowering Adhu’s temperature, to slow down the progression of the virus. She knows someone who might be able to help. Heading outside, she finds that Dorothy is arguing with JD, who is going to turn himself in. Molly agrees with Dorothy that he shouldn’t. She wants to go to the GSC. There’s someone who could help Adhu. It looks like they are both going to go. Which leaves Dorothy looking after Adhu. She’s not exactly enthusiastic.

Lucy is getting more and more worrying and it’s becoming more and more obvious. What no-one seems to have realised yet is that every other Humanichs, apart from Ethan, is based on her programming. That means they could all end up the same way.
