DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – The Legion of Doom

“The Legion of Doom” is episode ten of season two of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

This episode starts with Damien Darhk explaining that he was murdered by the Green Arrow in 2016, but was removed from the timeline 31 years before that by Eobard Thawne. Together with Malcolm Merlyn, the former head of the League of Assassins, they plan to locate the Spear of Destiny and change the past, and the future. Which is a bit of a different intro to normal.

The episode opens in Star City 8 months ago. The news is saying that Damien Darhk, the man behind the siege, was killed by the Green Arrow. The man watching turns off the news and pours himself a drink. It’s Malcolm Merlyn. Then Darhk and Thawne appear. Darhk is not impressed with Malcolm and Thawne introduces himself. Darhk asks Malcolm if he believes in second chances. When Malcolm says that he just watched Darhk die, he says that he has heard 2016 is not his best year. But he plans to fix that. They aren’t going to use time travel to fix their fortunes, but something much better.

At the end of the previous episode, “Raiders of the Lost Art”, Rip was captured by the LOD. Malcolm and Darhk tell Thawne that there has been no luck with the torture. Hunter is cooperative, just not in full possession of his marbles. It’s not that he won’t cooperate – it’s that he can’t. Without the Longinus Medallion, Rip is the only way of finding the Spear. Thawne grabs Malcolm and threatens to kill him. Malcolm is not impressed. He says he will use hypnosis and regression therapy to get Rip’s memories. Thawne tells Damien that the workings of the medallion is lost to history. Plus, they have another advantage over the Legends. Their idiots.

A sentiment that Mick is currently agreeing with. Sara is refusing to use the term Legion of Doom. Mick tells them they can trade the amulet for Rip. Amaya wants to identify the speedster. Sara says that Amaya is right. As is Mick. Not about them being idiots, but about using the medallion for leverage. If they can figure out how it works. Professor Stein suggests stopping treating it like a mystical artefact and play to their strengths. Technology. He has a colleague in Central City who could help.

Malcolm has had no luck with hypnosis. Rip’s memories aren’t buried – they’re gone. Thawne comments that this is what he gets for relying on a washout and a dead man. Darhk doesn’t appreciate such comments. He talks to Rip, about Thawne treating them like henchmen. Because henchmen end up dead. And asks when was the last time Rip had some dental work done.

Damien shows a tooth he has removed from Rip to the other two. There’s something on it. Account information for a safe deposit box in Switzerland that was last accessed in January 2025. The assumption is that the rest of the Spear is there. Thawne’s alarm goes off and he has to leave. He tells the other two to take the time sphere.

The professor and Jax are meeting the former’s colleague in Central City Jitters, 2017. The ‘colleague’ is Stein’s daughter, Lily. Who Jax didn’t expect to meet. Ever. Lily tries something on the medallion, which generates the floating display. The professor decides the coffee shop is perhaps not the best place and takes Lily to the Waverider. Amaya and Nate are surprised to see Lily.

Sara is unhappy. Lily is a time aberration and plucking her out of 2017 and sticking her on a timeship may cause more. Stein thinks that Gideon would have warned them. Plus, Lily thinks she can link the amulet to Gideon. Ray definitely wants to help with that. The professor would appreciate it if people – Mick – didn’t reveal to Lily that she’s an aberration. They are also having no luck identifying the speedster. Every speedster the Flash faced is dead, his friend, or a person he thought was his friend and is now dead. Which latter described Eobard Thawne.

In Zurich, 2025, Malcolm and Damien take Rip to the bank to access his safe deposit box. Damien would have preferred to kill everyone. Malcolm thinks it’s strange that Thawne never remains in place for very long. And why does a time-travelling speedster need to rely on anyone?

Nate, Amaya and Sara are thinking that the speedster is a new player. Someone from the future. But why does he need the Spear of Destiny? Because he can change history, not reality. So, what is he trying to change? Or fix. Malcolm is talking to Darhk about the same thing as Rip is trying to access his safe deposit box. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know his access code. This results in the bloodbath Damien wanted.

Mick, of course, reveals that Lily is a time aberration. And leaves it to Ray to explain. Who suggests that Lily’s father could do it better. Damien and Malcolm start squabbling again and Rip gives them some good advice, using The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as a reference. That may have been a mistake, the good advice. And, finally, it’s revealed why Eobard Thawne is still alive after being erased from history in “Fast Enough”. And why he keeps leaving places when his alarm triggers.
