“The Politics of Time” is episode six of season one of Continuum.
In the previous episode, “Time’s Up”, Kellog broke into Kiera’s room and took the piece of the time travel device that she herself had taken from evidence in “Wasting Time”. Cameron doesn’t seem to have noticed yet, but she does prior to the end of the episode – and Kellog is the obvious suspect.
As usual, this episode opens in the future. Kiera is attending a dinner with her husband and some friends. The her husband’s best friend makes a pass at her in the ladies room. It then goes back to the past (although there are clips from this later). Carlos and Kiera are leaving work when Carlos gets a phone call. Alec suggests she asks Carlos out for dinner – just as a friend – but Carlos needs to go somewhere to follow up on the call, which was from a friend. Said friend is a female investigative reporter; she apparently asked some questions of another friend, a political candidate, about his campaign for a union election.
Kellog then approaches Cameron on the street in a nice car the next day – he’s doing quite well for himself. He’s apparently acquired some codes to the surveillance feeds for the west coast, but is unable to use them by himself (this proves useful later). Using the surveillance, he says Cameron will be able to track down Liber8 and the others. When Carlos arrives there’s a call over the radio about a dead body. The dead body is that of Carlos’ reporter friend. Carlos gets himself made primary on the case, but without telling his boss – or anyone else – that he knew the deceased. It’s possible he knew her quite intimately the night before.
Carlos is also a friend of the person the reporter was with. She had claimed she had some campaign finance dirt on him that she was going to go public with. He’s going to keep the other friend out of this for the moment. It also seems the dead woman may have had something on the other candidate, the incumbent, in the election. Kiera, using her tech, knows that Carlos was friendly with Alisha, the dead woman, so she gets herself involved in the case as well, stating that Liber8 had been known to intervene in union elections.
Carlos’ personal feelings are getting in the way a bit, and unfortunately there’s evidence linking him to the scene. There’s more evidence linking him to the scene around the time of the murder, and Kiera also finds out that Carlos was with the other candidate. She is really not happy about the amount that Carlos has covered up.
The election is quite important, and it’s a prime area for setting up Carlos’ friend in a frame-up, Assuming he’s innocent, as Carlos claims. There’s only going to be a limited amount of time before others than Kiera find out. Fortunately, the first person to do so is Betty, who seems to have a bit of a thing for Carlos (and who doesn’t seem to like Kiera that much because of it). When it does come out, it’s not good. A pretty confusing case until close to the end – there’s clearly a setup, but who’s doing it?
In a “Matter of Time”, Alec told Kiera he might be able to fix the suit that was damaged in “Fast Times”. He thinks he’s making progress with fixing it. Although something odd happens on his monitors behind him as he’s messing with it.
