Continuum – Fast Times

“Fast Times” is episode two of season one of Continuum.

In the previous episode, “A Stitch in Time”, Kiera Cameron ended up back in 2012 Vancouver along with the members of Liber8. By pretending to be a detective from Portland, she associated herself with the local police, and she has now been more accepted after Liber8 attacked the police station, killing six police officers, as well as another two earlier, in order to free the man she had got captured. It was also revealed at the end of the episode that the man who smiled when everyone got sent back in time during the execution was the older Alec Sadler.

This episode opens back in the future (which is still a weird phrase) as Cameron is joining the police force, which involves getting an implanted chip and some type of ocular implants, as well as an advanced gun and multitool. Then it goes back to the present (also a weird phrase) and Kiera is entering the police station, whilst also speaking to Alec, the person who is currently inventing the tech she is using. She also seems to be getting on quite well with the first local-time detective she met, Carlos Fonnegra. It’s also the day of the funeral for the dead officers. Unfortunately, an officer from Portland P.D. is also present, and he knows the real detective that Cameron is impersonating. So the local police are not happy. So Cameron gets Alec to do a bit of hacking to create her a new, better, hidden but findable cover.

Liber8 is also planning something – the man they sprung from captivity is working on a method to get them back to the future. One of them, Kellog, wants them all to stay in the past and change the future instead, where they can operate without the same problems they would have in their future. The others aren’t interested in staying with him. The method involves attacking an electrical substation – briefly getting Carlos and Kiera stuck in a lift. The power wasn’t sufficient for the time jump. When it restarts, she stuns Carlos and leaves him handcuffed in the lift whilst she goes after Liber8. Then she steals a car. With a bit of difficulty – Cameron has never driven a petrol powered car before.

Liber8 aren’t the only ones who want to get back to 2077 – Kiera does too, as that’s where her husband and son are. So, does she allow Liber8 to get back, so that she can hitch a ride with them, or concentrate on stopping them?
