“Last Minute” is episode thirteen of season three of Continuum and the season finale.
In the previous episode, “The Dying Minutes”, Sonya had been captured after a failed attempt to sabotage Halo. Only perhaps captured wasn’t the correct word. She had been injecting herself with something multiple times prior to that and, whilst Dillon was questioning her, showed him some blisters on her arms before clapping her hands together. Which caused whatever she had injected to explode, apparently killing her and seriously injuring Dillon.
Kiera, with Brad’s help, had freed Original Alec from the Freelancers, and then taken him to meet up with Emily again. They apparently had a backup meeting place. Brad told Kiera that he killed Kiera Two, but they are both getting on pretty well. After the escape, Curtis had killed Catherine and some of the other Freelancers; it seems he wants to free the Traveller, the man who brought him back from the dead. Kellog took a photo to Alec Two showing Kiera with Original Alec, which is probably not going to do wonders for their relationship.
This episode opens in the future, but it’s Brad’s future, a future where Vancouver is in ruins, with fires still burning and fighting still going on. Definitely not an improvement over Liber8 and Kiera’s future. Brad is going on a mission, a last chance one, to try and prevent the mess. He’s going back in time and a not terribly convincingly aged Kellog is there to see him off.
In the past/present Kiera and Brad are in the cabin that they took Original Alec too. They are getting on pretty well; very well in fact. Kiera feels that she is actually closer to her family now, but that she belongs in the past/present.
Original Alec is elsewhere, in what looks like a hotel room, with Emily. He’s been siphoning off tiny amounts of money from Alec Two. He thinks he’s been getting away with it, but then a machine gun opens up and, rather inaccurately, riddles the room with bullets. They aren’t hit and the attackers flee. It seems Original Alec may have to take the fight directly to Alec Two, so they return to find Kiera and Brad (and Jason). Original Alec believes that Alec Two is aiming to prevent Brad’s future by eliminating him. What he plans to do with Piron and Sadtech sounds actually more restrictive than Kiera’s future. Alec Two may also have a working time travel device, bodged together with Jason’s help. Kiera has also reached out to a more unusual ally – Travis. So Travis and Kiera go after Garza and Lucas as well. The latter is easier to convince. Kiera is willing to fight to prevent their future from happening, even if she doesn’t like Liber8’s tactics.
Alec Two is practising a speech regarding the expansion of Halo. He’s not doing it that well yet. Kellog gives him some coaching, then goes to see Carlos at the VPD. Kellog wants additional manpower to protect Alec Two’s presentation. With Dillon seriously injured, it looks like Carlos has taken over, and he doesn’t want to play ball with Piron. Unfortunately if he doesn’t, the money goes as well.
Kiera and the others apparently have one attempt to change their future, and Brad has a beacon that came back with him which, if it does nothing, should indicate that the future has been changed. The alliance with Liber8 is one that Kiera is not over the moon about. It looks like they are targeting Alec Two’s presentation, the one that Carlos is protecting. It’s a bit of a con that they are running though.
Just when everything looks like it’s being sorted out, new problems arise, leading into the fourth and final season and “Lost Hours”.
