Battlestar Galactica – Pegasus

“Pegasus” is episode ten of season two of the new Battlestar Galactica.

CIC has an unknown contact and Adama, who is with President Roslin, calls to get an update. Colonel Tigh says it’s probably a Cylon Base Ship, going by the size. Apollo and a wingman are heading out, alert Vipers are scrambled and the fleet is getting ready to jump. The other ship is launching Raiders. Then Colonial transponders are detected. The commander orders a hold on jump and weapons and wants a ship-to-ship priority one channel opening with the reply on speakers. The other ship identifies themself as the Battlestar Pegasus. Adam makes direct contact as Pegasus supplies authentic recognition codes. Pegasus actual does the same. Adama asks if that’s Admiral Cain. It is. Cain (Michelle Forbes) orders their Vipers to stand down and Apollo says they won’t believe what he’s looking at. A big, shiny battlestar.

A Raptor arrives on Galactica and everyone is waiting to greet them; pilots, marines, officers and the admiral. Adama introduces Roslin as the President of the Colonies. Long story. They’re pleased to see them. Cain welcomes them back to the Colonial Fleet.

Adama, Roslin and Cain are in Adama’s quarters. Cain explains they were tracking a Cylon fleet and realised they were jumping to systems with resources. So, Pegasus did the same with the intent of attacking the fleet. And found Galactica instead. Pegasus was docked at Scorpion fleet shipyard during the attack, ready for refit and R&R. The shipyard and 5 ships, including two battlestars, were nuked. Cain lost 700 people by the time she got to CIC. They had no choice but to jump. Cain wants to see Galactica‘s logs; Roslin gives a look. She hadn’t thought that Admiral outranks Commander. Cain says she has no intention of interfering with Galactica‘s internal affairs. Though makes no mention of external. After the president leaves, Adama tells Cain that Roslin has come a long way from the secretary of Education. Cain also has a Cylon prisoner. Tigh has been having a drink with Cain’s XO, Fisk, in the meantime. Fisk says that Cain executed her previous XO, a man she’d been with for years, before the entire crew for refusing to obey an order. A dangerous order by the sounds of it. Then makes out he was joking.

Starbuck isn’t impressed that Pegasus’s pilots have scorecards on their ships. Pegasus’s CAG doesn’t seem happy with them and wants to see Galactica‘s CAG. Who is standing in front of him. He also says his commander is called Adama, not Cain. It’s an easy one to remember, as it’s Apollo’s name.

Gaius Baltar wants to examine the Pegasus‘s Cylon prisoner. Number Six wonders who it will be. On Galactica‘s flight deck, one of Pegasus’s crew, Laird, calls the Blackbird, built in the previous episode, “Flight of the Phoenix”, an ugly ship. But he actually seems quite impressed. And designed the engines it uses; though he thought they’d been phased out a decade ago. He was a designed, until the war, then became deck chief on the Pegasus.

Pegasus is resupplying Galactica, but the president tells Adama that the civilian ships aren’t getting supplies. And Cain isn’t answering her calls. Adama seems to take the fact that he’s outranked with equanimity. He’s been following orders his whole life.

So, they have a nice shiny much newer battlestar. Which is good. Other elements perhaps not so much. Tigh certainly doesn’t believe that Fisk was joking when he said Cain executed her former XO. Cain herself is rather fixated on taking the fight to the Cylons. Despite being horrendously outnumbered. She also seems less bothered about the civilian ships. It’s not long before she does start to interfere with Galactica‘s operations, and Galactica has some rather… individual characters on its crew. And, when it comes to how the Pegasus‘s Cylon prisoner has been treated, Galactica‘s crew is horrified. And the fleet blew one Cylon out an airlock and gave Cally a slap on the wrist for killing Boomer.

The story continues in the next episode, “Resurrection Ship: Part 1”.
