“Double Helix” is episode five of season one of Andromeda.
The Andromeda Ascendant intervenes in a battle between some Nietzscheans and some Than ships. Dylan tries to get both sides to behave, and the Nietzscheans ask him to come down to negotiate. Dylan’s own Nietzschean, Tyr, says that it is a trap and he will go instead. There, after outwitting the trap, the Nietzscheans offer him a home and a wife as his DNA is good. If he hadn’t, well, his DNA would not be good and he would deserve to die.
Odd people the Nietzscheans. They name themselves after Norse gods and famous military leaders. They live in what they call prides (as do lions. Do they consider themselves lions or animals?). They see nothing wrong with cheating – victory is everything, no matter what. Apparently, the Nietzscheans were loyal members of the Systems Commonwealth for years, until they believed the Commonwealth betrayed them, but frankly their culture really doesn’t seem like one that would have coped well. It seems that you’ve always got to be ready in case they stab you in the back, because if a Nietzschean can successfully betray someone, that person was never worth anything in the first place.
