“Shadows” is episode eight of season three of Warehouse 13.
In the previous episode, “The 40th Floor”, Sally Sukowski was captured after she had launched an attack on three Regents. When Mrs Frederic appeared and started torturing her, Jinks wound up unable to accept this, and so pulled a gun on Mrs Frederic, allowing Sally to escape. Not that it did her any good – just as she had killed the person who had failed her boss in “The New Guy”, she, too was killed. Her boss evidently does not take failure well. As a result of his actions, Jinks has been fired. Finally, at the end of the episode, Pete got a bit of a surprise – Jane, one of the two Regents who survived the attack, is his mother. This could be seen coming moments before it was revealed. His mother is now the Guardian of the Warehouse.
This episode opens at Leena’s with Pete basically having a go at his mother for not telling him she was a Regent. Although Mrs Frederic had said during “Buried” that agents were allowed to reveal what they do to one person, and one person only (although Pete is a Warehouse agent so its existence is not exactly a secret from him). Jane is attempting to explain herself when Mrs Frederic appears (really, how does she do that?). She says that explanations will have to wait for a time when they are not at war, for the Warehouse does appear to be at war, something they are not equipped to fight. When Mrs Frederic mentions the name of the company that employed Sally’s mercenary accomplice, A to Z Technologies, Jane recognises it and has a very bad feeling. It seems that Pete’s mother gets vibes, just like Pete does. She can’t remember why the name is important.
Pete is not happy with his mother but Jane herself is not too happy with Mrs Frederic’s recruitment of Pete. She isn’t having much look with remembering what’s important about that company name. Mrs Frederic has an idea. Artie is not happy with the idea – which is for Jane to travel back into her own memories – but there aren’t any other alternatives and he’s not having much luck himself tracking down the company’s ultimate owner. However, if another person goes with her, the risks of using the artefact is diminished. Mrs Frederic was going to accompany Jane, but Pete volunteers instead. The memory they wind up in isn’t the one Jane was aiming for though. It does give them a chance to fix their relationship though.
In Portland a man is mowing his lawn when his, presumably, wife says that she is leaving. The man, Jason, is then engulfed in a bright flash of light, showing his skeleton before he disappears. A light explodes and electronics seem to be knocked out, as if by an EMP. The wife didn’t see the disappearance itself, just sees that her husband has vanished. Neither Claudia nor Myka are terribly happy with Artie for Jinks being fired – even though he didn’t do it. They are being despatched to Portland to investigate the disappearance.
A woman who works at the t-shirt company that Jason owns says that he was abducted by aliens. Which seems a tad unlikely. Even for Warehouse 13. Jason had laid off a few people and some of those who are left were not fond of him, finding him to be far too businessy. Well, he was running a business. Then another man gets disintegrated – or whatever – the same way when he tries to get someone to talk to him. There is no obvious connection between the two. Then there is. The apartment that the second person was visiting has the windows covered in cardboard. Which is not at all weird. Unfortunately, it looks like whoever is using the artefact doesn’t seem to know what it is or how and why people are dying. Only that it’s connected to them. Claudia and Myka also can’t find the artefact involved.
Finally, the man who is behind the attacks on the Warehouse is revealed.
