“Many Happy Returns” is episode seven of The Prisoner.
Number Six wakes up, but discovers the water in the bathroom isn’t working, nor is there any electricity. And the radio isn’t on for once. Outside, there are no people, only a cat. Inside, the phone doesn’t connect. Six gets dressed and goes exploring. He finds no-one, and no-one appears when he rings the bell. He finds a taxi, which works, and takes the keys before heading to Number Two’s. There’s no response at the door and no Number Two or butler inside.
Number Six uses the taxi to get some tree trunks. These are used, along with other items, to build a raft. Six is careful to leave an IOU at the shop for what he takes, which includes a camera which he uses to photograph the Village. As Six is untying the raft to set sail, he hears something breaking. But it was only the cat breaking a plate.
Number Six sets sail and makes a makeshift compass and puts the camera film in a plastic bag to keep it safe. He writes a log, and many days later keels over on the raft. A boat pulls up next to him, but those onboard just steal everything and dump the apparently unconscious Number Six overboard. Six gets onto the boat before it leaves and sneaks around inside, finding a crate containing weapons. He sets a fire to create smoke, which the captain smells and speaks the first words in the episode so far (and there are very few at all for the first half, until Six finally speaks). Six grabs the captain, then the other person, when they come down to investigate.
Six ties them both up and sets sail. The two crew come around and manage to untie each other, then start to break out of the cabin they’re in. Six has seen a lighthouse and is steering towards it as the crew sneak up on him. They brawl and the captain gets a gun, but Number Six jumps overboard and swims off.
Number Six wakes on a beach near to the lighthouse and checks he still has the film and the log, then starts climbing up a cliff. He seems to have finally escaped the Village. Now he wants to work out where it is. It’s not going to be that simple.
