“Ghost in the Machine” is episode eleven of season four of The 4400.
In the previous episode, “One of Us”, Tom seemed to have finally been taken over by the person who was originally hosted by Matthew Ross. Doyle is in bed and she wakes up finding RossTom staring at her from a chair. He says he couldn’t sleep and didn’t want to wake her.
Maia and Diana are talking about Maia’s birthday when a man barges past them. They go around the corner and find ATMs spitting out bank notes. Along with notes saying that these are worthless and welcome to the new world.
At NTAC, RossTom, Marco, Diana and Doyle discuss this. It could be Jordan Collier who is behind this. Diana wonders if it could just be a hacker, not someone with an ability. Marco says that 50 ATMs from four sperate banks have been hit; too many for a hacker. RossTom says that to create the new world, destroying the economy of the old one would work. He and Diana leave and Tom says he has to get a CAT scan first. He doesn’t feel different, though.
Jordan Collier is talking to someone on the phone who isn’t going to take the shot; he’s waiting for Shawn’s test. Afterwards, Kyle says they know he will survive as his name’s on the list. Apparently, the man is worried about his followers. Cassie tells Kyle this wouldn’t have happened if he’d stopped Shawn. They need to get rid of Kevin Burkhoff. Kyle needs to do whatever it takes to fulfil the prophecy and help Jordan Collier bring heaven to Earth.
RossTom hasn’t gone for a CAT scan; he’s gone to a house where Isabelle is being kept. If she doesn’t get her abilities back, her father will die. And don’t worry about the doctors saying promicin will kill her. She can fulfil her original mission. Isabelle has worked out that RossTom isn’t Tom Baldwin. RossTom says he created her. Promicin is evil and the people who use it are evil. They won’t change the world; they will end it. Isabelle has to stop it. It’s what she was meant to do.
RossTom and Diana find Jordan Collier in Promise City. He says neither he nor his people attacked the banking system. But whoever did it has his best wishes. RossTom fantasises attacking Collier, Diana and Kyle.
Marco and Brady tell Doyle, RossTom and Diana that more systems have been affected. And every system has something in common. It’s running on Ubient’s OS. But is it an attack on Drew Imroth, corporate giant, or Drew Imroth, alleged Marked? Doyle says there’s no evidence that Imroth is a Marked. Diana says she and Tom are pretty certain. RossTom says that the attack is still on one of the largest companies and that will cause problems. A young woman enters and Marco introduces her, Abigail Hunnicutt, to the others. She’s new. She also has a manifesto that every infected computer is printing out about destroying Ubient software.
Lindsey, who was taken along with Maia and other children in “Gone: Part 1”, calls Maia to wish her happy birthday. And she has something for her to see, in Promise City.
Imroth isn’t very happy when RossTom and Diana are shown in to see him, claiming this is all their fault going after him and blaming Jordan Collier. He’s asked if he has a list of enemies. He does. In a binder and organised too.
Shawn finds Burkhoff working; his computer crashed because of the attack and he’s trying to recreate a paper he had on it. He doesn’t have time to take a break.
RossTom and Diana are going through Imroth’s enemies. She’s surprised he was so tame with Imroth. He promises he won’t be next time. On the way out, Diana asks RossTom about the CAT scan. He says it was fine. She follows him and sees him meeting Imroth.
Burkhoff is working when he hears Tess’s voice. Except it’s not test but a 4400, along with others and Kyle.
Isabelle attacks a guard and tries to get away, but she’s cornered.
When Diana meets RossTom at NTAC, he tells her he had a call for a meeting with Imroth. Very cloak and dagger. Imroth wanted RossTom to pass the case off to another agent, because of bias. RossTom said he had nothing to worry about.
It looks like both Diana and Doyle are starting to get suspicious of RossTom. And the Ubient attack is a problem for the Marked.
