“Red Sky at Morning” is episode fourteen of season three of The 100.
In the previous episode, “Join or Die”, Jaha had managed to get Kane to take the chip – by threatening to kill Abby. Which he would have done and, Abby being under Alie’s influence herself, wouldn’t have stopped him. Kane and Abby’s relationship (when not under Alie’s influence anyway) has improved a lot over the rather adversarial relationship that they had on the Ark. Mostly because Kane has mellowed a lot. Alie now has effective control over the former Arkadians and Polis as well. Clarke and the others found Luna, the last of the Nightbleeders, and Clarke offered her the Flame, A.L.I.E. 2.0. It wasn’t a huge surprise when Luna refused it. They’re now stuck on an old oil rig out to sea somewhere (the rig has been appearing in the opening credits all series but, until now, it was not revealed why).
This episode opens in Polis with Murphy, Pike and Indra, as well as the other prisoners, planning their escape. Indra wants to kill Jaha, as he’s the leader, but Murphy accidentally reveals that Jaha’s not the leader. He doesn’t reveal his knowledge about Alie before some of their captors arrive though to see who will take the chip – the ‘Key’ as the Grounders call it. Alie realises that one of the prisoners is free but, before they find Indra, she manages to kill them both. Before they escape, Indra makes Murphy continue the conversation. Murphy says that Jaha’s backpack houses the AI, and that destroying it might defeat the Alie. So Pike, Indra and Murphy plan to destroy it. Of course, it won’t be that easy (Alie had salvaged a nuclear missile in “Blood Must Have Blood: Part 2” in order to power it after all). Jaha and Alie are in the City of Light – the virtual reality or whatever it is is now highly populated. Alie wants Murphy’s friend Emori to help stop him.
Luna tells Clarke and the rest that they are going to have leave that night and never return. She hasn’t changed her mind about the Flame. Luna does not want to fight or kill again, and she believes that they will be safe on the rig (she’s wrong; Alie has naturally already infiltrated the rig), which is a sanctuary for those who no longer wish to fight or kill. Clarke does not want to leave – she suggests putting A.L.I.E. 2.0 into Luna’s head without her cooperation. Luna does not appreciate this, but she could have taken it a lot worse. If Alie’s forces take the Flame and she is able to use it how she wants, things will get a whole lot worse and Alie will become unstoppable. However, Luna did not flee the Conclave because she was a coward – but because she was the best fighter there and would have won. And she didn’t want to.
Monty, Raven and Harper are in Arkadia. They have Beka’s backdoor password to Alie and are looking at her code, mapping it out. They have found just how many people are now under her influence. Raven wants to use the password to attack Alie now, but Monty wants to follow the plan to wait for Clarke, as they will probably only have one shot. Raven manages to find a part of Alie’s code that shows she is protecting something and really wants to use the password to attack it. Monty ends up having to make a horrible choice – again.
Things are not going well.
