Supergirl – The Martian Chronicles

“The Martian Chronicles” is episode eleven of season two of Supergirl.

Kara walks into the alien bar where Mon-El is working as a bartender. She says to him that things have been a little weird between them. For, in the previous episode, “We Can Be Heroes”, Mon-El admitted that he had feelings for Kara. Mon-El has been talking to the regulars. Earth males are only supposed to show their feelings for sports and, occasionally, monster trucks. Kara tells him that being honest is great, and a trait that women like in men. She also thinks Mon-El was right and she’s not so sure they are right for each other. Going on with reasons that sound more like a bunch of excuses. No, it’s not because Mon-El is an intergalactic bartender but because he is the way he is. Overall, that could have gone better.

Alex approached and Kara that Mon-El told Kara he liked her. This does not come as news to Alex (or, probably, anyone but Kara). Kara says she doesn’t like Mon-El that way and that she put both feet in her mouth. It’s Kara’s Earth birthday, 13 years since she crashed, and she’s booked country line dancing. Alex looks like she has been trying to get a word in edgeways and explains that Maggie has tickets for a Bare Naked Ladies concert. Tonight. It’s their first concert together. Perhaps they could celebrate Earth birthday another night. Maggie arrives at this point – she knows one of the guys from work who’s on security and the tickets have been upgraded to VIP. Kara tells Alex to enjoy herself and, afterwards, asks M’gann for a drink. Something strong. She’ll have what Mon-El is drinking. He’s been drinking club sodas all week – which is Kara’s drink. The night is not going well.

M’gann heads outside to dispose of some rubbish and tells a homeless guy she can see them. And all the other forms they’ve been in all dad and yesterday. It’s Hank. He’s been following M’gann. Not because he doesn’t trust her, but because she told him the White Martians were coming for her. He has a duty to protect Earth. Perchance he isn’t telling the entire truth. M’gann tells him the White Martians are coming, they aren’t here yet, so he can stop. Guaranteeing that, at that moment, a White Martian will appear. It knocks down both Hank and M’gann then Kara comes out as well. But the White gets away.

At the DEO, they haven’t had any luck tracking the White. Kara thinks that Hank should stay at the DEO for his own protection, but M’gann tells Kara the White is there for her, not Hank. They’ve been telling her psychically that they want her to pay for her war crimes. M’gann doesn’t think she needs protection.

In the bar, a White Martian in human form approaches M’gann, calling her a name in White Martian that she doesn’t appreciate. That word is ‘wife.’ M’gann no longer considers them bonded and thought he, Armek, was dead. It seems she tried to kill him and apparently came close. The council wants M’gann even more than it does J’onn. Mars is a paradise now, with the eradication of the ‘vermin’ – the Green Martians. And they may commit more genocide if need be. Armek knows that M’gann has made friends. If she turns herself in two hours, he may let them live. He’s glad she made friend here on Earth because it will be a pleasure to watch them burn. M’gann decides to leave to protect the others, but Hank finds her again.

Alex has gone to the DEO to talk to Kara before the concert, to see if she’s mad. Kara claims she isn’t. M’gann is there as well, with Hank and Winn, then a second M’gann appears as well. Armek is inside the DEO. Hank brawls with the White, then the lights go out. When they come back on again, the White has gone. Hank puts the place on lockdown, to trap the White in the building. Of course, it can shapechange, so it could be any of them. One of those episodes then. Even personal questions won’t work, because White Martians can read minds. As can Hank, but there’s psychic interference. Which leads to an armed standoff between everyone. M’gann explains that Armek is the worst of their kind. And her mate. Although not by choice.

There is a way of checking if anyone of them is a White. Although White and Green Martians can change their form, the change reverts when their skin is close to a flame. M’gann is a White – which, on thinking about it, is not a great deal of help when looking for a White Martian. However, Winn is as well, and he bolts. So, where is the real Winn? The White Martian has put the reactor on critical. Kara asks what reactor? The one that powers the building. It’s been sabotaged and will explode, taking out ten city blocks. Perhaps the middle of a city isn’t the best place to put a reactor that is so easy to make go boom.

So, they have to sneak around the building, looking for the White Martian, and for Winn, so he can make the reactor not go boom. During this, Alex and Kara have a chat – yes, Kara was upset – and Hank admits that he’s not just protecting M’gann because that’s his job.
