“Body and Soul” is episode seven of season seven of Star Trek: Voyager.
The Doctor is on a comet sampling mission in the Delta Flyer with Harry and Seven of Nine. When the ship shakes, the Doctor wonders if he should have insisted on a better pilot. Harry would give anything to trade places, and isn’t sure he can take three more days of this. Seven, as the Doctor calls for her, suggests disabling his vocal processors. The Doctor has discovered preanimate biomatter and is enthusing over the possibilities when the Flyer shakes again. Because they’re under attack.
The attackers accuse them of transporting a suspected photonic insurgent through Lokirrim space. Subspace comms are offline and the Doctor’s matrix is decompiling. Harry tells Seven to hide the Doctor’s program. Armed Lokirrim transport aboard and ask to know where the photonic is. Seven tells them they murdered him. The Lokirrim also suspect the samples could be used to create viral weapons and confiscate the Doctor’s mobile emitter. They are to be taken aboard the Lokirrim ship; transporting photonics and manufacturing biogenic weapons are serious charges.
Harry and Seven are put in a cell. Only Seven seems to be acting oddly. Because she’s the Doctor. His program was downloaded into her cybernetic matrix and the Doctor seems to be in control. He won’t be sure about Seven’s consciousness until he gets out. Doctor/Seven then hurts his/her hand and smells something bad. Harry, as it happens.
Voyager is heading to rendezvous with the Delta Flyer and Tom is examining Tuvok. Tom thinks it’s a virus. Tuvok wants a medication in the database replicating immediately. Tom needs to know what the medicine is for before giving it out. A neurochemical imbalance, native to Tuvok’s species. Tom twigs what this is and asks if it happens every seven years. Yes; Tuvok is undergoing pon farr. The Doctor anticipated this and created a treatment that, combined with mediation, should control the symptoms.
Doctor/Seven is currently enjoying eating. Prison rations. Doctor/Seven, when he’s the Doctor, wants to modify his physical parameters so he can eat. With a holo stomach. Harry thinks they should focus on getting out. The Doctor is sure the captain will clear this up. Then guards come for Seven.
Doctor/Seven is taken to the Lokirrim captain, Ranek, who is on the Delta Flyer. Ranek thinks this is more sophisticated than the typical smugglers’ ship. Because they are explorers, not smugglers or terrorists. Ranek wants to know more about the vessel. He asks what a device is. The food replicator. Doctor/Seven replicates New York cheesecake and offers Ranek some. Ranek is concerned Doctor/Seven is trying to poison him. So, Doctor/Seven tries it. And goes into rapture. He/she replicates another for Ranek. Who also enjoys it and asks what else can be replicated.
Many, many things. Both have eaten a lot and seem drunk. Doctor/Seven says that his/her motor functions are impaired. ‘Her’ systems are degrading because they need to regenerate. Using the ‘regeneration device’ – the mobile emitter. Ranek wants something in return.
Doctor/Seve staggers back into the cell. ‘Seven’ has agreed to take the place of the deceased Lokirrim medic in exchange for the mobile emitter. The Doctor is downloaded back to the emitter. Seven is not happy how he’s been treating her body. The Doctor says one glass of wine can loosen a tongue. That doesn’t explain the other eight. Seven is painfully aware of everything the Doctor did. And seems to be suffering from his overindulgence. And will have to do it again, until they get out.
Doctor/Seven takes the place of the medic and is getting on well with another Lokirrim, Lieutenant Jaryn. It looks like he’s attracted to her. Jaryn, however, is attracted to her captain and thinks her brother would like ‘Seven.’ The captain, however, is attracted to ‘Seven.’ Things get emotionally messy. Meanwhile, Tuvok is struggling, albeit not as badly as other Vulcans have.
