“The Wire” is episode twenty-two of season two of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Garak is suffering from pain in his head, but he refuses to let Doctor Bashir take a look to find out what’s wrong. Then he collapses. On examination, Bashir discovers there’s an implant in Garak’s head that is probably causing the trouble.
When Quark, who had been asked by Garak to obtain a new implant, tries to do so, he discovers that it’s a classified implant belonging to the Cardassian Obsidian Order – their internal and external intelligence service which has a frightening reputation. Garak tells a number of stories about his past, and how he came to be exiled on the station, all of them different. When asked which are true, he replies all of them, especially the lies.
In order to save Garak’s life, Bashir is going to have to travel to Cardassia and speak to Garak’s former mentor – at least, according to him – the former head of the Obsidian Order.
