Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Melora

Melora is episode six of season two of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

A member of a low gravity race (really low gravity; it looks to be far lower than would actually be possible to have on a planet) and the first person of her race to join Starfleet is visiting the station, so Julian and O’Brien make things ready for her, the titular Melora, including a wheelchair and low grav quarters. Julian is quite impressed with her accomplishments.

Melora’s a little abrasive, and rather quick to react to anything (to a degree that could be taken as being insubordinate in a more militaristic organisation) she considers to be pandering to her physical limitations, which makes her a little hard to get on with. However, Julian makes an effort, and is quite struck on her, and she finally starts to unbend, and accept that everyone needs the help of others at one point or another. A relationship develops between her and the good doctor.

Quark, meanwhile, has his own problems. A former business associate of his, who has just finished an eight year sentence in a Romulan labour camp, arrives on the station. It seems he bears a bit of a grudge against Quark, and says that he’s here to kill him.
