“Life Support” is episode thirteen of season three of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
A Bajoran transports docks at the station after an accident resulted in injuries, some of them serious. On board the transport is Kai Winn and Vedek Bariel, the latter seriously injured. So seriously, that he actually dies. Then Doctor Bashir discovers he isn’t entirely dead, and manages to bring him back to life.
Unfortunately, although Bareil is alive, he isn’t well. He really needs time to get better, and this will require him being put in stasis. He and the Kai have been negotiating with the Cardassians to get a permanent peace treaty, and some other things, with Bareil doing most of the negotiating.
Kai Winn says she can’t continue the negotiations without Bareil, as he is too great a part of them. Continuing with the negotiations puts Bareil’s life in danger. Is Kai Winn simply concerned about the peace treaty, or does she want a handy scapegoat if it fails? She seems to have changed somewhat since being elected Kai, but is she really so different now?
