Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Family Business

“Family Business” is episode twenty-three of season three of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Quark is visited by a liquidator from the Ferengi Commerce Association – who are rather a big deal in the Ferengi Alliance. It seems that his and Rom’s mother has broken Ferengi laws – she’s been making profit and wearing clothes, neither of which females are allowed to do (as well as a host of other things; the Ferengi are more than a little sexist).

Quark returns home to sort this out – he basically plans to force their mother to admit her guilt. Rom, who has a rather better relationship with their mother, returns with him.

Their mother is not so willing to comply, though, and Quark is going to be ruined if he has to pay for her crimes (and in Ferengi society, pay is not a euphemism; it will cost actual money).

Back on DS9, Jake is pressing his father to meet with the freighter captain he mentioned in the previous episode, Explorers. It also seems Jake has mentioned his matchmaking to pretty much everyone.

Quite a few insights into Ferengi culture, as this is the first episode to deal so closely with them. Everything costs – finding out what Quark is charged with, getting a copy of the laws in question, using an elevator, standing, sitting, entering someone’s house, and the latter even requires guests to sign a waiver.
