Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Blaze of Glory

“Blaze of Glory” is episode twenty-three of season five of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Sisko has cooked for Jake and Nog. He’s cooked squid, which is Nog’s favourite human food, but cooked it in a sauce of tube grubs. Which definitely does not appeal to Jake (he liked it until he knew what it was). Nog has been working security, and does not like dealing with the Klingons. They have been ignoring Nog and refusing to acknowledge their presence. So Sisko tells him to do what a Klingon would, and confront them on it.

General Martok’s ship has intercepted a Maquis message – the Maquis were presumed to have been completely wiped out by the Cardassians and the Dominion. The message is presumably to Eddington, and says that the missiles have been launched at Cardassia, and will reach the planet in thirteen days. Whatever is on the missiles sounds to be quite deadly.

According to Martok, the Klingon High Council had decided to help the Maquis against the Cardassians, by providing them with cloaking devices to use on their ships. It seems the Maquis may have mounted the cloaking devices on missiles instead. If Cardassia suffers millions of casualties at the hands of human terrorists, they will ask for help from the Dominion. Who will be more than happy to launch a counter strike on the Federation, the Klingon Empire and everyone else in the Alpha Quadrant. Which would be bad.

The missiles need stopping, but first they need finding. Dax and Worf took the Defiant into the Badlands, but were unable to find the missiles before the Jem’Hadar located them. Sisko goes to speak with the imprisoned Eddington, in order to get more help to find the missiles. Eddington is not very interested in helping – the Cardassians wiped out the Maquis and everyone and everything he cared about. So he says he doesn’t care about a war erupting between the Dominion and the Federation. So Sisko offers Eddington a pardon in exchange for his help – but what Eddington really wants is the Maquis bringing back from the dead. Sisko heads out into the Badlands anyway in a runabout, to look for the missiles’ launch site, where there is presumably a means of deactivating the missiles – and takes Eddington with him.

Eddington is still not willing to help. He blames the destruction of the Maquis on Sisko. Sisko says that Eddington is just as responsible, for leading the Maquis into destruction. A lot of the episode is taken up by them talking to each other about their differing points of view. The Jem’Hadar are also in the area – and there is something else going on.

Morn, of all people, has gone berserk and attacked Quark with a barstool. Kira and Odo think that Quark must have provoked him in some way. Which is the case.
