“Into the Black” is episode twenty of season three of Sanctuary and the season finale.
Magnus is talking to Will about an event that is happening. The National Guard was called in but pulled out and Dr. Lee from the U.N. is on video conference with the commander of the force surrounding the area. The live video shows Abnormals coming up from Hollow Earth. Which is unusual to say the least. In the previous episode, “Out of the Blue”, Will and Magnus had been affected by a previously unseen Abnormal also believed to have come from Hollow Earth. Something odd is going on.
The commanding general, Villanova (Tom McBeath – Stargate SG-1‘s Harry Maybourne), wants to arrest all the Abnormals but Magnus wants them turning over to the Sanctuary network instead. There are a lot of Abnormals though, and they lack permanent facilities to house them. Villanova says he will transport the Abnormals and Dr. Lee agrees. The facility being set up is a less than friendly one and Villanova’s troops are treating the Abnormals as criminals until otherwise is shown. Henry is concerned because the events of the last year has made it harder to keep the existence of Abnormals secret. Henry thinks that now might be an opportunity to reveal the existence of Abnormals, but Magnus tried that more than a few decades ago. It did not go well.
The U.N. has also set up a security force to deal with Abnormals, over and above what the Sanctuary network does. Treating Abnormals as potentially hostile. This does not sound like a good situation, and things are more than a little tense at the camp. One of the people in the camp is Fallon, who worked with Adam Worth until he stunned her. She was sentenced to death but managed to escape thanks to members of her tribe.
According to Fallon, they left their tunnels after they lost power, power that was supplied by Praxis. There were rumours that Praxis had been attacked and, with no power, the various tribes decided to head to the surface. Ranna is also out of contact. Then Druitt turns up and tells them that Worth is alive – it seems Druitt didn’t kill Worth in “Pax Romana”. Worth had said he wanted to use the device to help save his daughter – who died over 100 years ago, the death being what caused Worth to split into two personalities. Worth believed the device would allow him to travel back in time, and he had a cure for his daughter’s illness.
Although the device was returned, Worth had already copied down its specifications. He had made a bargain with Druitt, but didn’t honour it. If Adam succeeds, history will become undone. So Magnus and Druitt are heading off together to look for Worth – and Magnus is really not happy with Druitt’s attempted bargain. Leaving Will in charge with a rather tense situation with the refugee Abnormals that could start spiralling out of control.
Other events in Hollow Earth are not so good either, and it seems that Worth’s experimentation – which has some unfortunate side effects – was responsible for the events of “Carentan”.
Matters are spiralling out of control above and below ground and the story continues in the fourth and final season and “Tempus”.
