“Eulogy” is episode three of season two of Sanctuary.
In the previous episode, “End of Nights: Part 2”, the attack by the Cabal on the Sanctuary network had been stopped, but this couldn’t really be considered a victory. Several Sanctuaries had fallen to the Cabal’s attacks and data stolen. Many Normals and Abnormals had been killed – Will’s girlfriend Clara had died during the attack on the London Sanctuary. Efforts to stop Ashley and the others like her were failing, even with Tesla’s creations and Bigfoot coming out of his funk, and Magnus herself would likely have been killed – if Ashley hadn’t broken her conditioning long enough to prevent the other Super-Abnormal from attacking her. Ashley then teleported whilst the EM shield was up, which would have killed both her and the other Super-Abnormal. All the Cabal lost were some Super-Abnormals – and they can always make more.
This episode opens with Magnus in a room when Druitt – dressed as if he is in the Victorian era, not the present – enters. Followed by Ashley. This is all a dream, of course; Magnus has fallen asleep at her computer.
Will is on a ship at the docks, talking to a Dr. Li about the repairs being carried out on the Sanctuaries that were attacked by the Cabal. Most repairs are progressing well, but the Tokyo Sanctuary has been completely destroyed. As a result, there are many Abnormals that need rehousing for the moment. Will said that Magnus had told him to expect 20 Abnormals; Li says that it’s actually 20 containers worth.
Kate – who appears to be a complete slob – says that she is going to leave, although Will asks if she wants to stay a bit longer. She notices that they have two dead Abnormals, the last of their kind, ones with very valuable tusks. So, being a mercenary, she sneaks down to steal them. It seems that the female Abnormal was actually pregnant and, whilst Kate is there, the baby escapes. Then escapes into the city. Henry has to get Kate’s, rather mercenary, help to recapture it. It’s growing and seems to have a taste for burgers.
Magnus has been keeping the EM shield up, which is proving a heavy drain on the Sanctuary’s power. She also has not held Ashley’s memorial yet. There is a reason; Magnus thinks that Ashley may still be alive. The EM field became unstable during the attack, and this instability increased when Ashley teleported. Magnus thinks that Ashley may still be alive, somewhere. Is this genuine hope or simply a last gasp?
Druitt – and Ashley was his daughter as well – believes she is dead. He is mourning her his own way though. Together with Tesla, they have been attacking the Cabal, killing of its members. There are still cells left, but the central brain trust has been destroyed and Dana Whitcomb is on the run. The Cabal may have come out of the assault much better than the Sanctuary network, but they are certainly not benefiting from it now.
Throughout the episode there are some clips of Magnus, back in the 50s at the time of the launch of Sputnik 1. She is travelling through the deserts of New Mexico by the looks of it, searching for somewhere.
