“Sign from Above” is episode eight of season two of Mutant X.
Jesse and a girl, Amanda, arrive at her home; she beat him, but she’s a feral and Jesse says she should have. However, she has to kick him out now, as she’s at work at 7 AM in a music store. She’s not into showing off her power like Mutant X and the other freaks. Jesse tells her she’s not a freak. Well, they’re not entirely normal, are they? She’ll see him on Friday.
After Jesse leaves, a woman tells her she shouldn’t make promises she can’t keep. Amanda says she doesn’t get many break-ins and they’re about to find out why. The woman knows her name and everything about her, including what she is. Valuable. Amanda fights the two men the woman has with her, but is taken down.
Jesse is at Sanctuary, worried because he can’t get hold of Amanda. Brennan suggests that he’s been blown out. Jesse disagrees. And he’s not sure he should be taking advice from Brennan, who hasn’t had a stable relationship in how long. Relationships and handling women are, according to Brennan, different things.
Adam is meeting with a man, Bergman. Something came across Bergman’s desk. In the last 72 hours, three bodies have turned up in the river. Adam suggests the police’s homicide department. According to Bergman, the bodies have similarities to the bodies found in the Genomex debacle. Adam doesn’t know every mutant Genomex created – the first time that’s been suggested – and towards the end they were not sharing information. Bergman says that Adam does have a registry and could maybe help put a name to some of these young people. Adam has an angry retort, but does look at the photos. He recognises one of them. Amanda.
Adam tells Jesse about Amanda. Jesse realises they must have been waiting for Amanda, and says he should have stayed. Adam tells him Amanda was a powerful feral, almost as strong as Shalimar. Whoever killed her knew who she was, knew about her powers. Jesse asks who would want to kill Amanda. Adam says they are going to find out, then stop them.
Jesse, Brennan, Emma and Shalimar head to Amanda’s house. A comment Emma makes doesn’t go down well with Jesse. When Brennan and Jesse head inside, Emma explains to Shalimar that since their powers revved up, she’s finding it harder to keep up her defences against stray emotions. Especially when a friend radiates pure grief. Shalimar says Emma could help. Which leads Emma into talking about the morals of messing around in someone’s head. Shalimar can see what she means. But next time, be a little less cold.
Nothing bar signs of a struggler is found inside and outside they are suggesting maybe it’s a job for the police when the woman and two men from the previous night show up. She’s happy they’re here; it saves them the job of looking. Shalimar contacts Jesse and Brennan. One proves resistant to Emma’s power and she’s knocked down. Shalimar is taken down shortly afterwards, and is carried off. The others give chase, but Shalimar and her captors have vanished.
Back at Sanctuary, Adam doesn’t know who the attackers are. He does know how Amanda died; all her spinal fluid was drained. He doesn’t know why, but is afraid the same thing will happen to Shalimar. Adam is going to speak to Bergman again. Brennan has a suspicion that the attackers are going to come hunting for them.
Shalimar is now restrained and the woman wants something from her. Beside her being prime mutant stock. She wants Adam’s database, and Shalimar will tell her.
Meanwhile, Bergman is telling Adam that there’s something he’s checking up on. A struggling woman was taken into a warehouse. Jesse, Brennan and Emma head there, and see the two men attacking a third. The two men are driven off, even though it didn’t really seem they were losing the fight. Inside the warehouse, there are empty restraints and some empty vials on the floor. Emma says the person they saved, Kyle, wants to help. He saw Shalimar being taken away. They grabbed Kyle at work in front of everyone. Kyle thinks they are going to Mercy General.
Adam analyses the vials; what was in them would kill a human, but also had fragments of human DNA in it. He says they have, going by Amanda’s timeline, only a limited amount of time to rescue Shalimar.
Something seems off about Kyle. This is confirmed when the woman meets with Bergman and says that she has got one of her people inside. New Mutants give her people intense physical power, and with that power you can rule the world. even hers. Suggesting that this isn’t her world.
