Mutant X – Kilohertz

“Kilohertz” is episode five of season one of Mutant X.

Jesse and Shalimar are on the plane heading back to the Sanctuary, talking to Adam about the concluded mission, when something affects the plane’s computers, Sanctuary’s, and Eckhart’s at the GSA. An individual claims that his name is Kilohertz and he’s speaking to the freaks of the world. He’s had it up to here with the way they have been treated. They have the power and they are not going to take it anymore.

Afterwards, the plane lurches as it loses power. The Sanctuary’s computers are down as well, so Adam can’t rebook the plane remotely. Emma and Brennan enter and Adam explains the situation. Adam needs more power, so Brennan sends electricity into the system, enabling Adam to9 reboot the plane and stop it from crashing. Afterwards, Adam says they had better find the New Mutant before the GSA does; for his own sake and theirs.

Proxy Blue is reporting on what Kilohertz has done until Adam mutes it. He’s talking to Shalimar about the situation. Everyone is trying to figure out how Kilohertz does what he does. Emma says he is causing trouble for others; a high school student is in a coma after some other students decided he was one of the freaks. Kilohertz is doing a lot of damage and, sooner or later, people will realise what he means by ‘freak.’

Another minion, Renfield, is meeting with Eckhart – Eckhart is hard on minions. Eckhart wants to know if Renfield is aware of Kilohertz – he is – and says that Kilohertz could be a disaster for the GSA. If people realise what he means, their work will get harder and uglier. It’s bad enough that there are freaks out there but Eckhart is not happy that an anarchist electronic one can invade his facility and wreak havoc at will.

Renfield – one of Eckhart’s tame New Mutants – is apparently in his final semester of training; there were apparently rough parts in his indoctrination. Eckhart tells him it’s rare for such a raw recruit to be pressed into service, but he believes Renfield’s peculiar talents will help. Renfield is being sent to WXDV with FCC credentials to investigate a possible source of the signal.

Jesse is talking to Emma about Kilohertz; he’s being fairly forgiving about nearly being killed. Although, as Brennan states, that doesn’t mean Jesse wouldn’t give Kilohertz a bit of a hiding. They are trying to see what he really looks like, using pieces of face from his broadcasts. Emma suggests it’s like what she does with her telepathy. She’s not a computer person, though; her parents were very into the organic and natural thing. Adam checks in with them; he’s working on something to use as a weapon against Kilohertz.

Renfield, posing as someone from the FCC, is questioning the WXDV station head. Who isn’t interested in cooperating unless Renfield does it by the book and properly. So, Renfield uses his power and puts the man into some sort of stasis by the looks of it, then accesses the compute, before leaving.

A cross-check of the New Mutant database at the Sanctuary reveals a match for Kilohertz; Barry Sterling, who was just seen at WXDV. Adam wants Brennan and Emma to invite Barry to come with them. When they arrive, Barry says he has nothing to say to the FCC and runs, escaping through a satellite dish.

They return and tell Adam that Barry thought they were with the FCC. It’s also explained how he escaped, but Brennan says it was sloppy, as Kilohertz left a lot of energy buzzing on the dish. Adam says that explains the collateral damage that Barry is causing, and thinks the FCC person was probably from the GSA.

Eckhart is sealing off his skin when Renfield appears. Renfield wants to report on his data retrieval. That was the report. Eckhart doesn’t want to hear reports until a job is done.

Adam is working on his weapon against Kilohertz and Renfield is going through his data when Kilohertz strikes again. Renfield has identified him too. Kilohertz is apparently going to hit the stock market and he and Jesse are going to try and build a firewall. Brennan and Shalimar are heading to Barry’s apartment, and they can get physical, but the GSA is heading there as well. Barry escapes, again, using a satellite dish.

Adam wants Barry caught before he realises what he’s truly capable of. He’s also a bit of a jerk, but a potentially very dangerous jerk.
