Mutant X – Into the Moonless Night

“Into the Moonless Night” is episode one of the third and final season of Mutant X.

At the end of the season two finale, “Lest He Become”, Naxon was exploding around everyone, including Eckhart and Mutant X. This episode opens with emergency crews on scene. Brennan is unconscious, remembering what happened. Jesse is looking around and Brennan wakes. Shalimar wants to know how Emma’s doing. She’s dead. And Adam is missing.

In the Double Helix, Jesse can’t find Adam’s comlink. Shalimar suggests returning to Sanctuary, which has better search capabilities. Nobody matching Adam’s description has been transported to a local hospital.

Jesse still can’t locate Adam’s comlink at Sanctuary. Shalimar is looking at a photo album when Brennan enters. They need to make arrangements for Emma. They reminisce, both upset. Then Jesse calls; he’s got a hit on Adam’s signal. Brennan and Shalimar head out and Jesse gives them directions. At the location, there is a rough sleeper with what may be one of Adam’s cufflinks. Brennan makes demands of the man. Then Eckhart speaks out.

In the previous episode, Eckhart looked a lot healthier. Now, he doesn’t. He’s with the mutant, Silva – one of only three minions to appear in more than one episode – who has Adam’s ring. Eckhart tells them if they do anything stupid, many people will die. Shalimar says he’ll be one of them. Eckhart is already dying; his immune system was destroyed years ago. The synthetic dermal casing was all that kept him alive, and it was breached during the escape from Naxon. Eckhart wants all of Adam’s research on his condition, in exchange for Adam himself. Brennan lunges at them, but they’re only there holographically.

Jesse can’t get into Adam’s files and if the system senses intrusion, it could wipe the drive. They can’t figure out how to get in, but then a woman materialises and says they give up easy. She can control light and bend it around her, but Shalimar can still see the heat she gives off. The woman can also blind them with light. She was called back because Adam’s disappearance has worried a number of powerful people and she’s been asked to be involved in his return. They’re have a higher chance of getting Adam’s files if they knew his password. Which is Lexa. Her name.

Lexa gets some food and gives some to Brennan and Shalimar. On being told to make herself at home. Lexa states it was her home, for two years. Mutant X 1.0. Until she realised she wasn’t a joiner. There were people Adam answered to who realised he’d lit a genetic time bomb that they had to put out, and the only way was to work with Adam himself. They game him funds, information and Sanctuary, and made a deal to allow Adam to escape Genomex and the GSA (though the GSA didn’t appear to be created until long after Adam left). Lexa works for herself, but sometimes her goals coincide.

Jesse has found the data on the therapies for Eckhart, some possibly successful. For some reason, Adam seemed to be trying to help Eckhart. Brennan thinks they shouldn’t hand it over; there’s no guarantee Eckhart has Adam or will hand him over. Brennan sees little difference between Eckhart and Adam. Lexa agrees with Jesse; they need to go in with a plan. Be ready to destroy the disc and to neutralise Eckhart.

They contact Eckhart from the Double Helix and arrange a meeting. Eckhart has three mutants with him and recognises Lexa. He talks about belief; Eckhart’s own belief that he would crush Adam Kane and their believe that Adam was alive. Sadly, neither of these conflicting beliefs were born out as truths. Eckhart was denied the pleasure of killing Adam with his own hands and they that Adam was alive, because the comlink was retrieved from Adam’s lifeless hands as his body lay on the shore, charred beyond recognition. Their plan to destroy the disc and capture Eckhart doesn’t work; Eckhart gets away with the therapy.

Without Adam, Brennan’s rising distrust in him comes to the fore, which means he’s unhappy with Mutant X. Then there’s Lexa, a person who they don’t exactly trust and who may not be that trustworthy. Plus, Eckhart is on the move, intending to heal himself and rebuild. And Adam is supposedly dead. Supposedly, because Eckhart isn’t the most trustworthy source and, even if he is telling the truth about recovering the comlink, he did say Adam’s body was charred beyond recognition. Which means perhaps it wasn’t Adam. And just what was Adam into?
