Mutant X – Double Vision

“Double Vision” is episode twelve of season one of Mutant X.

Emma is telling Brennan that he takes her to the nicest places, as they are in a rundown building. He says it wasn’t his choice. Emma wants to know how well he knows the person they are meeting. As well as you know anyone you work with. Emma asks if this work was when Brennan was a lowlife and hoodlum. He tells her that’s not nice. Justified, but not nice. They collaborated on a few projects here and there but she never showed any sign of being a New Mutant. Some party tricks but nothing major. Emma wonders what raised the GSA’s interest then.

Maddie Conlan, who they are meeting, appears at this point. Brennan hugs her and she kisses him in return. Which he didn’t expect. After some pleasantries, Maddie tells Brennan he isn’t doing so well. As some GSA agents appear. Maddie apologises; she had to. The two agents don’t do so well, so Maddie starts creating a ball of power. Brennan hurls lightning at her, the two forces combine and there’s an explosion. Everyone gets knocked down. Only Emma hits the ground twice. There are two Emmas. Brennan comes around and carries one Emma way, not noticing the second. Maddie and the GSA agents grab the second Emma.

Emma is being examined at the Sanctuary and Adam wants to know if she feels okay. Shalimar stars a scan and Emma gets worried, asking if it’s safe. A machine she’s been scanned with before. Jesse is reassuring Brennan that he got conned; it’s no big deal. Adam tells him he let his guard down, that’s all. Brennan is still upset, because Maddie wasn’t like that. Nor did she have powers like that and they’d been in situations where she had motive to use them.

Eckhart is examining Emma Two and saying that the force should have killed her. No; he wouldn’t rather she was dead. Maddie has a headache and Eckhart wants her to see the doctor again. She doesn’t want any more operations. Eckhart reminds her she would still be a small-time hustler and asks if she is still interested. He would never force anyone to better themselves. Maddie says she is and Eckhart gives her some time to recuperate. A few hours. Meanwhile, without anyone noticing it, Emma has come to.

Brennan has headed to a fairly dodgy looking bar and speaks to the bartender. He explains that he’s looking for Maddie, as she practically lived there. The bartender, Axel says she hasn’t been in for a while. Moths. Or perhaps weeks. A while, anyway. After a bit of threatening each other, Axel explains that Maddie got caught with stolen goods and the cop had an in with a government guy who she cut a deal with. Maddie might be at an ex-boyfriend’s.

At the GSA, Emma Two is about to be injected when she grabs the doctor’s hand. Dr. Kenneth Harrison, seen in “Dark Star Rising”, the first time a minion has returned since Thorne. When agents are brought, Emma Two takes them down, before more arrive. Eckhart comments that this is a side of her he didn’t expect. Emma Two states she’s nothing like the rest of the New Mutant freaks. She wants to join the GSA. Eckhart believes this to be a ploy.

At the Sanctuary, Shalimar and Jesse are sparring when Emma One arrives. She concerned they aren’t being careful and has protective gear for them to wear. She wishes there was a better way of dealing with the GSA than fighting. They need to be more precautions. When Emma One leaves, Jesse wonders if it’s PTSD.

Eckhart isn’t believing Emma Two’s offer. He offered her a job before, after all. She corrects him; she was a prisoner. Perhaps the hit affected her and brought out the real her. No, Eckhart shouldn’t trust her; she will prove herself. Dr. Harrison states that Maddie missed her appointment, and they need a final read on her condition. Emma knows where Maddie might be, a feeling, and offers to get her back. Accompanied by some agents, of course.

Brennan has returned to the bar; Maddie wasn’t where Axel said. He admits she’s in the back. Maddie tells Brennan she had no choice; the alternative was being killed. Prison wasn’t an option. Before they operated on her, the most she could do was slide a quarter across a table. Then Emma Two arrives and attacks Brennan. Maddie is bundled off. As Emma Two leaves, Brennan sees Emma One behind him.

They now know that there are two Emmas, and Brennan says they are both real. Adam believes that the attack split Emma into two separate entities. If they don’t reintegrate, it could be fatal for both of them. Only neither Emma wants the other to be part of her again.

This isn’t really an Evil Twin episode, because it isn’t really a Good Emma and an Evil Emma. More a Cautious Emma and a Headstrong Emma. For once, Eckhart doesn’t really have a minion of the week. A former minion has returned and neither Maddie nor Emma Two are proper minions.
