Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – The Devil Complex

“The Devil Complex” is episode fourteen of season five of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In the previous episode, “Principia”, S.H.I.E.L.D. got some gravitonium from the Principia – which was floating in the air, not underwater. However, General Hale’s people had already been there and taken most of the gravitonium. Mack also got some arms for Yo-Yo – or, at least, some of Hale’s mechanical soldiers so that arms could be made. Hale also had some connections to HYDRA, but she claimed that she did not think much of the organisation and wasn’t part of it. Deke has worked out that Fitz and Simmons are his grandparents, but he has not shared this as yet.

The episode opens with something forming, another anomaly from the Fear Dimension – an astronaut. Fitz is working on the gravitonium they recovered to try and create a device to shut the rift. Fitz is talking to Simmons about missing British junk food, but he is also failing to come up with a method of compressing the gravitonium. Then the astronaut arrives and attacks Simmons. The anomaly is destroyed, but not before it looks to have killed another agent.

Mack is working on the mechanical arms for Yo-Yo. They are prototypes that he and Fitz are developing based on Hale’s mechanical soldiers. The process is causing Yo-Yo pain, but she wants to push on faster than Mack is willing to do.

Not being able to compress the gravitonium is causing Fitz a lot of stress. Deke is spacing out and acting weirdly around Fitz and Simmons. Deke wants them to be careful – after all, he hasn’t been born yet. Anomalies are appearing again, and the astronaut is not Simmons’ worst fear.

Daisy is tracking General Hale, and locates her, so Coulson heads out to capture Hale. Which is done really easily. Worryingly easily in fact. Coulson wants a chat with Hale, to find out what she is doing; Coulson doesn’t know everything about Hale as yet. Only that she is definitely not an ordinary USAF general. Hale says that she is working to prevent extinction, and offers to show Coulson more, if he goes with her. And an unexpected face shows up.

Back in the Lighthouse, it seems that Fitz’s worst fear has manifested – the Doctor. Not the nice Doctor, but Doctor Leopold Fitz from the Framework. The Doctor tells Fitz that he wants to do what Fitz is incapable of doing.

In the post-logo scene, it looks like another previously unseen player has just been revealed.
