“Providence” is episode eighteen of season one of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
At the end of the previous episode, “Turn, Turn, Turn”, which seemed to be happening at the same time as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, HYDRA had revealed itself and S.H.I.E.L.D. was in tatters. Coulson was only one of the most senior agents left who wasn’t a HYDRA recruit and Garrett had been revealed to be the Clairvoyant. On the way to the Fridge (which turns out to be an enormous skyscraper; funny, I’d always assumed it was a bunker), Agent Ward revealed himself to also be a HYDRA agent and freed Garrett, although the rest of the time does not know that yet.
At the beginning of this episode Ward frees Raina, the girl in the flowered dress, who had been captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. in “The Magical Place”. S.H.I.E.L.D. itself is being regarded as a terrorist organisation, and Coulson’s team leave the Hub as a Colonel Talbot is sent to deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. and decide who was what.
Coulson and the team are heading towards a secret facility and Garrett and Ward are assaulting the Fridge. Neither Ward nor Garrett are what can be called true believers; Garrett joined because he thought HYDRA were going to win, and Ward joined because Garrett.
It looks like HYDRA are going to play a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
