“Fun & Games” is episode six of season five of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The previous episode, “Rewind”, focused on Fitz who had been left in the past when the others were sent forward by Enoch in “Orientation: Part One”. The alien, Enoch, who had sent them forward did so because of a prophecy, and when another prophecy – from Robin, the daughter of Charles Hinton, the Inhuman clairvoyant from “Spacetime” who could see how people were going to die – said that Fitz was needed, Enoch had Fitz go to the future as well, as it was now prophecy. Only not through a monolith, but by being cryogenically frozen (which involved breaking back into the place Fitz had broken out of and the great line ‘Release the ferrets.’).
The entire episode built up to this, and Fitz was then awakened in the future by Enoch, and asked if he could play the part of a not-very-nice person. Fitz, who has been struggling to deal with his actions in the Framework, certainly believes he can do that bit.
So, now we are up to the end of “A Life Earned”, when Fitz revealed himself after saying that Daisy, as the Destroyer of Worlds, should fight to the death. Now, Fitz didn’t live through the destruction of Earth, so he only knows this through second hand – and unrevealed as yet – sources, so he doesn’t have a personal grudge against her. Which suggests that this is a ploy of some type.
The episode opens with a teenage boy scavenging and selling various things before he is taken by a Kree. Coulson is talking to Yo-yo and Mack; he is worried about May who had remained to fight the Kree, Sinara, because May was still injured. Coulson is right to be worried, because Sinara has returned to Kasius, which certainly suggests that May lost. Tess approaches them and says that the Kree are harvesting the children – this is to put them through terrigenesis, for more product to sell to Kasius’ guests. The boy from earlier, Flint, is someone that Tess knows.
At the auction, Enoch is describing the other attendees to Fitz; they are not pleasant people and Enoch does not like them. Fitz calls them the worst of the worst, but Enoch says that Fitz is worse. Or, rather, not so much Fitz s the space marauder alias that Enoch has constructed for him, a violent individual with unlimited wealth. Fitz suggests simply shooting their way out but Enoch says this only has a 2% chance of success. When Fitz sees Simmons, he comes up behind her and speaks to her, eventually proposing marriage – not knowing that she can’t hear him. Fitz manages to make a ‘good’ impression with Kasius and his guests, certainly playing the role of a space marauder well.
Flint naturally goes through terrigenesis, which ends up causing problems. May has been captured to fight for the amusement of Kasius and his guests. And the battle in which Daisy shows off her skills as Quake is certainly impressive. More of Kasius’ personal history is revealed, and his relationship with his family. One of Kasius’ guests phrases Kasius’ current position rather less nicely than Kasius himself would prefer.
It looks like we are finally going to see what the ‘uninhabitable’ surface of the remnants of the Earth is like in the next episode.
