“Carry On” is episode eight of season two of Manifest.
Ben wakes from a nightmare about the fire in the previous episode, “Emergency Exit”. Michaela is at the scene; a body is brought out wearing TJ’s bracelet.
At the precinct, Bowers is briefing them about the fire. Yes, 828s were the target, but some of the injured and dead were not passengers. Drea thinks the Xers were responsible; Jared tells her they weren’t.
Simon White, the head of the Xers, is at Ben’s. He says everyone is upset at TJ’s death; Olive disagrees. White excuses himself to go to the bathroom, but takes photos of Ben’s research. Olive is trying to reassure herself that TJ made it out alive when Michaela arrives. She wants to speak to Ben but Olive wants to know. Michaela hands over TJ’s bracelet.
Jared is at a meeting of Humanity First. Afterwards, Snow speaks to him. Jared warns Snow that the investigation into the fire will likely impact the Xers. Snow says they wouldn’t do that; they’re getting close to exposing the Xers and violence would make them sympathetic. Jared isn’t saying they would. The fire was set by a rogue member of the Church of the Believers, whose leader has now disappeared. Snow thinks they can use that, claiming it’s a false flag operation. And wants Jared to keep an eye on Billy; he’s too impulsive.
Zeke finds Saanvi at the hospital. His frostbite on his fingers is getting worse, like in the cave. Can she help?
Drea tells Michaela that she thinks Jared is a little too close to the Xers. Michaela thinks Jared is leaking police intelligence; he copied her reports and lied about it. Drea suggests tailing Jared.
Ben is worrying about how he’s handling Olive. Grace tells him to give her space, and she doesn’t think Ben has processed the death of his mother. Ben is thinking about the illustration in the book, which looked like him carrying Olive out of the fire. He touches the book and gets a calling. Chanting. He calls Michaela; she didn’t get it.
Saanvi examines Zeke and explains she’s working on a treatment which shows promise. It’s not necessarily safe. Zeke asks if it’s more dangerous than dying. Well, no. They can move ahead.
Olive is blaming herself for making TJ go to the club and Grace is reassuring her when Ben enters. He has the book and suggests they go to the memorial outside the club. Olive isn’t in the mood for callings or memorials.
Jared speaks to Billy about not going off on his own; Billy doesn’t take this well. As Jared leaves and kisses Tamara outside, Drea and Michaela are watching. Michaela says that bar isn’t Jared’s vibe; something is going on. She wants to go in; Drea tells her she’ll be made as an 828 in an Xer bar and goes in herself.
Ben goes to the memorial, and hears chanting again. This leads him to a Buddhist centre. TJ’s mother was a Buddhist. Likely not a coincidence.
Saanvi’s experiments may have had an unforeseen side-effect. And Drea and Michaela are confirming that Jared is in with the Xers.
