Krypton – Savage Night

“Savage Night” is episode eight of season one of Krypton.

This episode opens two weeks before the current events. It begins with Seg-El’s first encounter with Adam Strange in “Pilot”. After giving Seg the stone, Adam had disappeared. This is where he disappeared to. It’s some sort of empty, well-lit place, and Adam obviously recognises it, for he is calling someone, or someones, unseen ‘tightwad assholes.’ A voice says that Adam stole their technology and disappeared with it for years and they are the assholes. Adam says he didn’t steal it, he borrowed it. The unseen speaker says the device could tear apart the fabric of space and time and destroy everything that ever was or ever will be. Adam replies that he intended to return the technology but, well, time travel makes it hard to keep track of things.

Adam tells the speaker that an alien is going to stop Superman from being born, something that gives the unseen individual pause. Evidently they consider that bad. The voice suggests that someone better qualified than Adam should do it if true. Adam tells the speaker, who he calls Sardath, that he doesn’t see anyone else stepping up, and gives a speech about saving Superman. The conversation they are having continues later in the episode.

In the present, Adam finds Kem and gives him another speech about how there is no-one like Superman in the universe. Kem thinks Adam has given this speech before. Adam’s denial is not convincing. Adam says he is going after Zod and Kem tells him that General Zod doesn’t scare easily. Adam doesn’t plan to scare Zod, but Kem tells Adam that Zod will kill him to death. Kem does say he will get Seg to meet Adam, if Adam can restrain his urge to kill.

In the previous episode, “Transformation”, a plan had been made to shoot at the Voice of Rao during the ceremony at the end of the Nova Cycle festival to get the Sentry to reveal itself. However, before this could be done, one of the Voice’s novices accused him of being something else and told the watching crowd that the creature was deceiving them. The Sentry then essentially agreed, and told those watching that he had been transformed, and turned into a flaming man. Which impressed everyone watching; the Voice probably looked as if he had become Rao. So, getting the Sentry to reveal its true nature is probably not going to work now.

Kem stumbles across one of the Voice’s novices, and asks her about Ona. She tells him that Ona is safe, because the Voice likes her. This novice and another had found out that the Voice had changed. He had tried to make them believe he was reborn, but they had seen the Voice in the Genesis Chamber, where Kandorians are born, apparently sucking energy from it. She believes the Voice is using the embryos as batteries.

Kem returns to Zod, Jayna, Nyssa, Lyta and Seg and tells them this – Nyssa is on their side because her father had tried to kill her so the Voice wouldn’t kill him. When it’s said that the embryos aren’t batteries, Zod says that people are essentially just energy, and that the greatest source of energy in Kandor is the Genesis Chamber. If the Voice drains all the embryos, they are all lost, because that is the only way their species reproduces now. The Voice is currently telling Daron that, when his work is complete, he will leave Kandor and Daron will finally have the control he desires.

Seg and the others plan to attack the Voice whilst he is in his trance in the Genesis Chamber. Zod tells the others he will recruit help from Black Zero, which doesn’t really make Seg happy. Seg, Nyssa and Lyta are going to head into the wastelands to find Dev’s body. Dev had been taken over by the Voice as one of the Red Shard puppets under his direct control. Using what the Voice implanted in Dev, they should be able to hack the Voice’s link with Red Shard, disabling them.

After Zod questions Jayna about why she was staging a coup, she tells him it was to save her daughter. Zod says she made the right choice; besides, if she hadn’t, he would never have been born. Later, General Zod is surprisingly honest to Jayna about his own personal history. Perhaps too honest.

Having Lyta and Nyssa in a skimmer with Seg definitely causes tension. Jayna shows in combat that there’s a reason she was Primus. And Adam’s goal to save Superman means he is actually aligned more with what Brainiac wants for the planet than Seg and the others. So which way will he turn?
